'Cats Down Richmond To Clinch Spot In A-10 Championship

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Right fielder Lee Miller's 4-for-5 performance led the Davidson baseball team to a convincing 22-7 victory over the Richmond Spiders Friday evening at Wilson Field. The win clinched the final conference series and secured a spot in the 2015 A-10 Championship in Davidson's first season in the league.
With their third-straight win, the Wildcats improved to 26-19 overall and 14-9 in the conference, while the Spiders fell to 26-23 on the season and 14-9 in the A-10.
Davidson had a near perfect day offensively scoring its 22 runs off 21 hits. Although only scoring seven, Richmond recorded 18 hits, but left 11 Spiders on base along with tallying the only error of the day.
Miller led both teams with three doubles, a homerun, three runs scored and five RBI. Three other Wildcats picked up three hits apiece, including designated hitter Ryan Lowe with two doubles and the only triple of the day. He also scored three runs.
Davidson scored at least two runs in all six innings scored, including six off five hits in the fourth that made it a 15-1 ball game.
On the mound, LHP Rob Bain pitched the first 7.1 innings for the 'Cats. The senior allowed only two Spider runs with four strikeouts for his fifth win of the season. RHP Josh Smutzer came in for relief and threw the final 1.2 innings.
Four Spiders appeared on the mound for Richmond, including LHP Zak Sterling who allowed the first seven runs off six hits for his second loss of the season.
The two teams will return to Wilson Field, May 16 for the series finale at 12 p.m.
