PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Emma Sissman and Lucy Sexton had two goals and an assist each, but it was not enough as Davidson dropped its third one-goal game in Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse action with an 8-7 setback at La Salle Friday evening in McCarthy Stadium.
The Wildcats, 4-9 overall and 1-4 in league play, have suffered three of their four A-10 defeats by one-goal. They also fell to George Washington at home, 11-10, and at Richmond, 6-5, in overtime.
Friday's game saw La Salle (7-6, 3-2 A-10) score goals at the 11:57 mark and later at nine minutes to break a 6-all tie and hold on for the win.
Sissman, who's three-points were a season high, made it a one-goal deficit on her 16th goal of the season off an Annie Brockett assist with just over five minutes left in regulation. But, Davidson was held to just one more shot attempt at goal the rest of the way as it came up short in trying to force overtime.
Joining Sissman and Sexton in scoring was Emily Rademacher, Morgan Burch and Catherine Schmidt with a goal each. Rademacher also tallied an assist to push her season points total to team-best 28 (20 goals, eight assists).
The Explorers were led Alanna Diffendal, who had three goals and an assist. Katelyn Fay scored two goals to go with a helper, while Caitlyn Brostrand netted a pair of goals.
The first half saw a combined five lead changes and ties before La Salle went into the break up 4-3. Sexton got the 'Cats on the board at 20:47 with her 21st goal thanks to a Sissman assist and it was 1-1.
La Salle scored the next two, but Davidson came right back with another Sexton goal halfway through the half and Burch tied it up at 3-all with her nine score of the year. Both goals came on free position shots as the Wildcats went 3-for-4 on the night.
After the Explorers went up 5-3 with less than 30 seconds gone in the second half, Schmidt made it 5-4 with her third goal of the year on a Sexton assist just a minute and a half later.
Sissman and Rademacher tied up the game for the last time at 6-6 when they scored with 19:17 and 16:44 on the clock. La Salle's Brostrad and Fay though broke the tie up, with Fay's goal at the nine-minute mark proving to be the game winner.
Davidson finished with 13 shots, 14 groundballs and seven draw controls, compared to La Salle's 20, 24 and 10 in each category.
Defender Holly Thomas had a team-high three of Davidson's seven caused turnovers, while four different players scooped up two groundballs each. Goalie Katy Boyle finished with seven saves and a pair of groundballs.
Davidson closes out the weekend at Saint Joseph's Sunday, with game time set for 12 p.m.
