PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Sophomore Nicole Pettiglio scored a career-high four goals and Davidson used a 5-0 run in the second half to break up a close game on its way to earning a 13-10 road win against Saint Joseph's Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse at Sweeney Field.
Davidson netted its second league win to move to 2-4 and 5-9 overall. Saint Joseph's fell to 5-10 on the year and remained winless in the A-10 at 0-7.
Down 9-8 with over 23 minutes left in the second half, Catherine Schmidt sparked a game-changing 5-0 spurt with back-to-back scores nearly 30 seconds apart to help the Wildcats take a commanding 13-9 advantage. Pettiglio capped off the scoring run with her fourth goal of the game on a free-position shot and 4:38 remaining.
Matching Pettiglio with four points on the day was Emily Rademacher, who had three goals and one of the Wildcats' two assists. The senior pushed her points total to a team-high 32.
Joining Schmidt with two goals was Paige Farrar as she matched her season best, while Annie Brockett and Emma Sissman scored once each. Brockett added an assist.
Kelly Phelan of the Hawks netted four goals and Bonnie McShane scored twice, while four other Hawks had single goals. McShane registered one of Saint Joseph's three assists on the afternoon.
Both teams played to an even 7-all draw in the first half, with Pettiglio supplying three goals for Davidson and Phelan matching with three of her own goals to pace the Hawks' offense.
Davidson grabbed a 3-1 lead 10 minutes into the start the game thanks to two of Pettiglio's goals, but Saint Joseph's tied it up at the 16:24 mark on Phelan's second goal of the game. From there the lead went back and forth.
The Hawks got on the board first to start the second half just 40 seconds into play, but Rademacher answered for Davidson with her 22nd goal of the season at the 27:48 mark.
Nora McCallion snapped the tie once again for Saint Joseph's, going up 9-8, before the senior Schmidt help give Davidson the lead for good with the first of her two straight scores.
Goalie Katy Boyle won her fifth game of the season with eight saves and added two groundballs.
Rademacher (5) and Sissman (4) pulled in nine of Davidson's game and season-high 19 draw controls, while Holly Thomas picked up a team-best three of the 'Cats' nine groundballs.
Both teams fired off 24 shots for the game, with Pettiglio recording eight of them. Davidson was also 4-of-6 on free position attempts, while the Hawks were just 1-for-4.
