CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In their first-ever Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship, Davidson scored its first victory with a 4-1 decision in the first round over St. Bonaventure Thursday morning at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Wildcats (12-9) advance to the quarterfinals where they will play Fordham Friday morning at 10 a.m. The Rams moved on with a 4-1 win over Rhode Island in their first round match.
"I really liked the way we competed today, especially in doubles," said first-year head coach Sara Anundsen. "We came out excited, composed and ready to fight in our first A-10 Tournament. I feel that we have prepared really well for this tournament, so now it's time for us to have fun, enjoy the moment and compete to the best of our ability."
Opening the match up with doubles, Davidson rolled to the early 1-0 lead over the Bonnies (6-13) after scoring 8-2 and 8-0 wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. The duo of Anna Catharine Feaster and Ally Sexton won their sixth in a row at No. 2 to run their impressive record to 16-5.
The pair of Sarah Stein and Ava Todd won their 10th together on the season with the victory at No. 3.
Feaster, Todd and Sexton then sealed up the team win with straight set victories at No. 1, 3 and 6, respectively. Playing her fourth match at the top spot, Feaster netted a 6-3, 6-2 win to push her season record to 15-6.
The outstanding freshman year continued for Todd, cruising to a couple of 6-2 wins for her 19th victory in 21 matches. The first-year player ran her record at No. 3 to 7-1 overall.
Winning her fourth singles match of the year was Sexton, shutting out her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
Davidson as a team improved to 74-48 in singles action, with all six positions having won 10 or more matches.
