HIGH POINT, N.C. — In a back-and-forth game that went down to the end, High Point scored a pair of goals in the last 10 minutes to send Davidson to a 9-7 defeat Sunday afternoon at Vert Stadium in women's lacrosse.
A matchup of former Big South opponents who met in the past two league tournament championship games, the Wildcats fell to 3-3 on the season as they were seeking to halt a three-game skid against the Panthers (2-6).
Davidson had come back from a 7-4 deficit with a 3-0 run only to see the Panthers score goals at the 10:02 and 4:34 marks for the final scores of the game.
Lucy Sexton recorded her fifth multi-goal game of the season with three goals to pace Davidson and give her 19 on the year. Emily Rademacher scored twice, while Nicole Pettiglio and Annie Brockett scored once each.
Emily Cooke pushed her career assist total to 118 with a pair of helpers, while Emma Sissman had one assist.
High Point's Kendyl Gardner had three goals, and Erica Perrotta added two goals and an assist. Samantha Brown had two assists to go with a goal, while Emily Meier picked up a goal and an assist.
After Perrotta gave the Panthers a 7-4 lead with the first goal of the second half, the 'Cats mounted their comeback over the next 15 minutes. Sexton tallied her third goal of the game with 21:53 on the clock to make it 7-5.
Seven minutes later, Brockett netted her 15th goal of the season to make it 7-6 and Rademacher capped off the 3-0 run with her eighth score of the year to tie things up.
Perrottta broke the tie up two minutes later to give the lead back to the Panthers. But, Davidson earned the draw control on the ensuing possession and fired off three shots during that possession only to see each one halted by HPU's goalie Julia Burns. Burns finished with five saves overall.
High Point tacked on one more goal with 4:34 left and the 'Cats were held without a shot the rest of the way.
The first half saw Sexton give Davidson a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes of play, but the Panthers went on a 5-0 run during a 10-minute stretch before Sexton scored the final goal of half to make it 6-4 in favor of HPU.
High Point held advantages in shots (24-16) and groundballs (26-14), while both teams tied with nine draw controls each.
Holly Thomas had a nice defensive game, forcing three of the Wildcats' eight turnovers, while picking up three groundballs and two draw controls. Goalie Katy Boyle finished with 10 saves to go with two groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Davidson remains on the road and plays at Elon next Saturday, March 21, at 2 p.m.
