Kalinoski and McKillop Receive League's Top Honors; Three Others Earn All-Conference
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – In addition to Tyler Kalinoski being named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Bob McKillop Coach of the Year, Jack Gibbs and Brian Sullivan earned second-team recognition, while Peyton Aldridge was voted to the all-rookie team, as announced by the league office Tuesday morning.
A senior from Overland Park, Kansas, Kalinoski ranks among league leaders in scoring (16.9/3rd), rebounding (5.7/19th), assists (4.2/3rd), steals (1.2/15th), 3-point field-goal percentage (.433/4th), 3-pointers made (84/1st) and assist/turnover ratio (2.9/1st).
On pace to become the first Davidson player in school history with 1,000 points (1,269), 500 rebounds (495), 300 assists (327) and 200-career 3-pointers (236), Kalinoski scored in double figures 26 times this season. Named A-10 Player of the Week three times in 2014-15, the 6-4 shooting guard capped the regular season with a career-high 32 points and nine assists, while going 12-of-14 from the floor, including eight 3-pointers at Duquesne.
This marks the fourth straight season a Davidson (23-6) player has been voted conference player of the year.
After being picked to finish 12th in the preseason poll, McKillop guided the Wildcats to the 2015 Atlantic 10 regular season title with a 14-4 record in league play. Now in his 26th season at the helm, McKillop has been named conference coach of the year 10 times (9 SoCon, 1 A-10).
Along with averaging 16.0 points, 4.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game during the regular season, Gibbs is shooting 50.2 percent from the floor, 45.5 percent from 3-point range and a conference-best 87.9 percent at the charity stripe.
A native of Westerville, Ohio, Gibbs is the first Wildcat with multiple 30-point performances since Stephen Curry, including a career-high 37 points in Davidson's win at UCF earlier in the season. The 6-0 shooting guard has scored in double figures 18 times and joins Kalinoski as the only three-time player of the week recipients.
Sullivan, who serves as a tri-captain with Kalinoski and Gibbs, ranks third on the team in scoring at 13.1 points per outing. In conference play, the 5-11 guard averaged 15.3 points and 4.1 assists, while leading the league with 55 3-pointers made against league competition.
An All-SoCon performer a year ago, Sullivan enters postseason play having scored double figures in 15 of his last 17 games, including a season-high 28 points at La Salle (2/14), which earned him A-10 Player of the Week.
One of three Wildcats to start every game this season, Aldridge is averaging 9.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while shooting better than 40 percent from long range. A two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week selection, Aldridge has hit the 20-point plateau four times, including a game/season-high 25 points against nationally-ranked North Carolina (11/22).
Winners of nine straight, the top-seeded Wildcats will make their A-10 Tournament debut with a 12 p.m. tip Friday against the winner of #8 UMass / #9 La Salle at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
