BRONX, N.Y. — Davidson came back from a 13-point second-half deficit, but saw Fordham score 12 of the last 14 points in the final five minutes to pull away from the Wildcats and earn a 54-46 win Sunday in both team's regular-season Atlantic 10 women's basketball finale in Rose Hill Gym.
Down 38-25 with 12 minutes left in the second half, the 'Cats ran off a 19-4 run to grab a 44-42 lead with 5:04 on the clock. The momentum was halted though when the Rams (19-10, 11-5 A-10) closed with a 12-2 run to escape with the victory.
Sparking the charge for Davidson (5-24, 1-15 A-10) was Dakota Dukes, who scored nine of her 13 points during the rally. Alexandra Long chipped in six of her team-high tying 13 points during the run as well, finishing a career-best 6-of-10 from the floor. The 13 points were also a career high for the junior.
Lillian McCabe dropped in eight points off the bench, while Hannah Early finished with a team-high 10 rebounds despite being held to four points, 10 below her season average.
Emily Tapio paced the Rams with a double-double. She scored 12 points, including five straight that turned a two-point Wildcat lead into a 47-44 Fordham advantage that it would not relinquish, and added 10 rebounds.
Fordham's Tiffany Ruffin and Hannah Missry added 11 points each, while Samantha Clark finished with seven points and 12 boards.
A pair of McCabe free throws got Davidson to within three, 49-46, with 46 ticks remaining, but the Rams hit 5-of-6 free throws in the closing seconds and held the 'Cats to just two shots.
Fordham raced out to an 11-4 lead to open the game and increased it to 23-10 with 8:34 left in the first half. The first of two three-balls by Lillian McCabe at the 7:51 mark made it 23-15, but it was as close as Davidson got the rest of the way and headed into halftime down 31-21.
The Rams held a 42-33 edge on the glass in the game. Davidson did outscore them in the paint, 22-16, and held them to 37.5 percent shooting, including just 5-of-17 from three-land. The 'Cats finished shooting at a 32.9 percent clip.
Davidson now gears up for its first Atlantic 10 Tournament, March 4, in Richmond, Va. The 'Cats will open against 11th-seeded La Salle Wednesday in the first round at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Early's double-digit rebound game was her fourth of the season and eighth of her career … Dukes double-figure game was her 13th this season and 43rd of her career, while Long tallied her fifth of the season and career.
