Davidson Nets First Win, Splits Doubleheader

DAVIDSON, N.C.  — A trio of Wildcats went perfect on the day and Davidson won its first match of the season with a 5-2 win against Wingate before falling to Presbyterian 5-2 in the afternoon as part of a doubleheader Saturday in men's tennis in the Knobloch Tennis Center.
 
Davidson moved to 1-3 on the season, while Wingate, ranked No. 30 in the Division II poll, fell to 0-2 and the Blue Hose improved to 7-1.
 
The day started off with Davidson sweeping through the doubles vs. the Bulldogs, taking all three positions by the score of 6-3. The pair of Ricky Saad and Shamael Chaudhry won their first match together this year, while J.B. Gough and Jordan Hart improved to 3-1.
 
Chaudhry and Gough both won their singles matches as the 'Cats took four of the six positions. The duo won 6-0, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 and 3 positions.
 
Artem Khrapko and Saad sealed up the team win with victories at No. 2 and 6. The first-year Khrapko came back from dropping his first set 6-1, to net 6-4, 6-4 wins in the next two sets for his first collegiate victory. Saad earned his second straight win to start the season with a strong 6-3, 6-2 win.
 
In the afternoon match against Presbyterian, Davidson took the top two singles positions for its two points. Chaudhry won his second match of the day, and third straight, using three sets at No. 1. After falling in a tie-breaker to open the match, the freshman came back with a pair of 6-4 wins for his third victory of the season.
 
Khrapko also won his second match of the day, taking a three-setter as well with a 5-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2.
 
Presbyterian took the doubles point to start the match, with the tandem of Saad and Chaudhry finishing the day perfect at No. 3 for the 'Cats. They took a 6-1 win. The doubles point came down to the No. 2 position where the match went to a tie-breaker, but the duo of Khrapko and Hager fell short 7-3.
 
Davidson hits the road for the first time this year, taking on Sacred Heart, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m.
