Davidson Drops Final Non-Conference Game at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. — James Madison's Jazmon Gwathmey scored a game-high 27 points to pace four Dukes in double figures and JMU defeated Davidson 87-45 Wednesday evening in women's basketball at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Wildcats finished their non-conference slate at 6-7, while James Madison moved to 7-4 on the season.
Gwathmey hit 10-fo-19 shots and added five free throws on her way to her fifth 20-point outing of the season. She had 15 points in the first two quarters as the Dukes build a 29-point lead.
Angela Mickens scored 17 points followed by Ashley Perez with 14, while Kayla Cooper-Williams rounded out the double-digit scorers for James Madison with 10.
Dakota Dukes went 6-for-13 from the field with three free throws on her way to 15 points to pace Davidson. Mackenzie Latt finished with 14 points and added seven rebounds, while Kianna Speight came off the bench for seven points.
A Dukes' free throw with 7:29 in the first quarter made it 5-3, but that was as close as Davidson would be on the night. JMU pulled away with a 13-0 run in the quarter and never looked back.
James Madison hit four three-pointers in the first quarter on its way to a 26-10 lead at the end of the quarter. The Dukes continued to push out their lead to as many as 29 in the second quarter, heading into halftime up 48-21.
The second half periods saw JMU lead by as much as 37 on its way to the win.
Davidson shot just 26.9 percent from the floor compared to JMU's 43.3 percent. The Dukes also hit 22-of-28 free throws and held a 52-40 advantage on the glass.
The Wildcats will celebrate New Year's Day in New York as they open Atlantic 10 play at Fordham, Jan. 2.
GAME NOTES: This was the third meeting between the two schools, with James Madison having won all three meetings now … The 'Cats' 40-rebound effort was their eighth of the season with that many or more … Dukes registered her eighth double-figure scoring game of the season, while Latt picked up her team-leading 10th … Davidson's six non-conference wins is the most since going 6-5 to open the 2007-08 season.
