Strong Performances Not Enough at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Davidson women's swimming and diving team earned six first place finishes at Gardner-Webb as the Wildcats (4-5, 2-1 A-10) were narrowly edged by the Runnin' Bulldogs, 138-124.
Sophomore Elise Lankiewicz led the way for the Wildcats between the lanes, picking up wins in the 1,000 and 500 freestyle and 200 butterfly events, while helping Davidson to top-3 finishes in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relays.
Freshman Sarah Coats turned in a strong performance on the day, collecting three top-3 finishes. Coats earned second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and third place in the 200 IM. Kassie Shannon claimed three top-3 performances, including third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.41 and second in both the 50 and the 100 freestyle events, swimming 24.64 and 53.61 respectively.
Angie Healy collected a first place finish in the 200 freestyle. Healy posted a 1:56.06, .22 seconds ahead of Gardner-Webb's Giorgie Graves. Lauren Malachowski (1:57.72) and Kate Carter (1:58.23) ranked third and fourth respectively.
Kate Moreton took second in the 100-yard backstroke event with a time of 59.48. The Wildcats didn't have to wait long for their next finisher as Shannon touched the wall in 1:00.41 to place third. Emma Tobey swam a 1:04.11 to take sixth.
The Wildcats went 2-3-4 in the 100 yard breaststroke. Coats led the way with a 1:07.84, less than two seconds behind first-place finisher Charity Byrum of Gardner-Webb. Meredith Nakano turned in a 1:08.37 to rank third, while Katy Williams swam a 1:08.43 to finish fourth.Lauren Malachowski picked up a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke. The junior turned in a 2:09.21, while Moreton swam a 2:09.60 for third place.
Davidson returns to action Feb. 18-21 for the Atlantic 10 Championships at Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
