DAVIDSON, N.C. — In a first-time matchup between both teams, Davidson's Mackenzie Latt recorded her seventh double-double of the season, but Fordham's Emily Tapio countered by scoring a game-high 23 points and the Rams earned a 66-45 Atlantic 10 victory Wednesday night in John M. Belk Arena.
Fordham (15-6, 7-1 A-10), which came into the game second in the league standings, won for the seventh time in the past eight games.
Joining Tapio in double digits was Hannah Missry with 14 points, while Tiffany Ruffin hauled in 12 rebounds to go with eight points and four assists.
Missry hit four of the Rams' seven three-pointers on the night, including back-to-back triples in the middle stages of the second half that helped spark a 14-3 run to push Fordham's lead out to 20 and put the game out of reach for Davidson.
Latt paced the Wildcats (5-16, 1-7 A-10) by scoring 16 points on 8-of-17 shooting and pulling in 13 rebounds, with a season-high 12 of them coming on defense.
Hannah Early recorded her 20th double-figure scoring game with 11 points, while Dakota Dukes added nine points and Lillian McCabe had seven off the bench.
Davidson kept things close in the first half, which featured five lead changes and five ties. McCabe buried a three-ball that gave the 'Cats a brief 17-14 edge, but Fordham answered by going on a 12-1 run to open up a 26-18 lead with 4:58 left in the half.
Tapio would score the final six points to give her 15 for the half and the Rams held a 35-24 edge at halftime.
A Dukes' free throw with 15:37 left in the second half cut the 'Cats' deficit to eight, 41-33, but the Rams answered right back again with six straight points to go up 14 three minutes later.
The 'Cats cut the deficit one last time to under 10, getting a shot from downtown by Early to cap off a mini 7-2 run and make it 49-40 with 8:42. Fordham then put the game away with its 14-3 spurt and led by as many as 21 the rest of the way.
Fordham held a 43-28 advantage on the boards, while it shot 42.1 percent for the game compared to Davidson's 34 percent.
Davidson finishes out the month of January Saturday when it plays Saint Joseph's at 2 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Early has scored in double figures 48 times overall for her career … she is now 47 points away from 1,000 for her career … Early's 54 three-pointers on the season are 13 away from tying Ashley Lax's single-season record of 66 set in 2008-09 … Latt's double-digit scoring game was her 13th of the season, while her 13 rebounds were two off her season high … Fordham was the sixth of 10 new opponents Davidson is facing this year.
