'Cats Host Rider and No. 11 Wake Forest at Belk Turf Field

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team will be in search of its first win of the season when Rider and No. 11 Wake Forest visit Belk Turf Field this weekend. The Wildcats and the Broncos kick off Saturday, Sept. 5 at noon, while Davidson and Wake Forest meet at 1 p.m.
About Davidson
After a two-game opening weekend, Davidson (0-2, 0-0) looks for its first victory of the season. The Wildcats fell 3-1 to Georgetown, Aug. 30, before dropping a 4-1 decision to Ball State the following day.
Hannah Fisher tallied the lone score for Davidson against Georgetown to lead the offense. The freshman's first collegiate goal put the Wildcats on the board midway through the first frame to cut the deficit to one. Melissa Funsten rocketed a shot from the top of the circle that touched the stick of Anna Davis before Fisher put it away.
The next day, Becca Jones found the back of the cage against Ball State. Jones got a hold of the ball in front of the cage and snuck it between the posts, past Ball State's Shelby Henley.
Scouting Rider (1-1, 0-0)
Coming into the weekend with a 1-1 record, Rider recently posted a 1-0 win over Missouri State and a 3-2 overtime loss to Saint Francis (Pa.) in their opening weekend. Senior Dezarae Fillmyer is Rider's sole goal scorer with six points on three goals. Joelle Prettyman has played every minute in net, holding a 1.47 goals against average and a .700 save percentage.
All Times Against the Broncos
Davidson and Rider will meet for just the third time in program history with the first meeting occurring in 2000. The Wildcats and Broncos are tied 1-1 in the all-times series. In 2005, Davidson posted a 3-2 win over Rider.
Scouting No. 11 Wake Forest (1-1, 0-0)
The Demon Deacons, who are ranked No. 11 in the initial NFHCA Coaches Poll, enter the game with a 1-1 record after splitting a pair of contests at the 2014 ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Wake Forest dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 20 Iowa in its season opener, before the Demon Deacons earned an overtime thriller against No. 17 Michigan, 3-2.
Wake Forest is led by Anna Kozniuk, who has tallied two goals this season, while Goergia Holland and Sarah Thornhill have each found the back of the net once. Goalie Valerie Dahmen has tallied five saves in two games.
All Time Against the Demon Deacons
Davidson and Wake Forest have squared off 49 times in program history, with the Wildcats trailing 16-31-4 in the series. In 2012, Davidson fell to the Demon Deacons, 6-1. Wake Forest has won the previous five meetings heading into this weekend.
That's a First
Freshman Hannah Fisher found the back of the net in the Wildcat's home opener against Georgetown to record her first collegiate goal and Davidson's first point of the 2014 campaign. Fisher became the first freshman to score Davidson's first goal of the year since teammate Anna Davis did so in the 2012 opener against William & Mary Aug. 25.
Captains
Senior Madeline Herder and junior Melissa Funsten were elected captains for the 2014 season. Herder was a consistent part of the defensive unit for the Wildcats, starting each of the 20 games last season. Herder registered one defensive save against Longwood. Funsten was a force on both sides of the ball finishing the year with seven goals and two assists.
Immediate Impact
Eight rookies will join the Davidson field hockey for the 2014 season; Paige Albert, Anna Brewer, Lauren Gampper, Alex Kane, Dodi Allocca, Hannah Fisher, Morgan French and Kate Meeks. Each of the freshmen saw time in the first two games of the season, while Fisher, Alloca and Brewer earned starts.
Defending the Cage
Emily Leytham and Connie Cape have split time in the goal this season for the Wildcats. Leytham has earned two starts and tallied five saves to own a .643 save percentage, while Cape has seen time in net and recorded two saves for a .500 save percentage.
On the Sideline
Ginny Turner is entering her eighth season at the helm of the Davidson program. Turner owns a 67-78 record on the sidelines.Turner is joined this season by first-year assistants Catherine Ostoich and Kristen O'Rourke.
Against Ranked Opponents
Three of Davidson's opponents this season are currently ranked in the NFHCA initial poll, including Duke (4), Massachusetts (10), and Wake Forest (11).
