DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team notched its first win of the season Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field. The Wildcats defeated Rider, 2-1 to improve to 1-2 on the season.

Junior Lucy Pidcock and sophomore Becca Jones each tallied scores in the win.

After more than 10 minutes of a stalemate to open the game, the Wildcats began its attack. Junior captain Melissa Funsten got the ball at the top of the circle and loft the ball towards the goal. Pidcock controlled the pass and found the back of the net to give Davidson an early 1-0 advantage.

The Wildcats padded its lead when freshman Hannah Fisher inserted the ball off a penalty corner in the 48^th minute, where it was stopped by Funsten and passed off to Katherine English. English fired the ball straight to the left post where Jones redirected the shot into the back of the net.

As time expired in regulation, Davidson was called for a foul and Rider was awarded a penalty stroke. Rider's leading scorer, Dezarae Fillmyer sent that ball past Davidson's Emily Leytham for the score.

Though Rider held advantages in both shots (13-11) and corners (4-3), the Broncs couldn't figure out goalkeeper Emily Leytham and the stingy Wildcat defense. Leytham turned aside eight shots, allowing just one goal on the day to pick up the win.

Davidson returns to Belk Turf Field tomorrow to take on No. 11 Wake Forest at 1 p.m.
