DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite an eight-save effort from junior goalkeeper Emily Leytham and a strong defensive performance, the Davidson field hockey squad suffered a 3-0 decision to No. 11 Wake Forest Sunday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.
The Wildcats could not get into an offensive rhythm, as the Demon Deacons controlled the ball most of the first stanza. Wake Forest peppered Leytham with 13 shots, but the junior goalkeeper made six saves to keep the score even at zero heading into half time.
In the second half, Davidson became to move the ball into the offensive third more, but could not get a shot off.
After successfully denying the Demon Deacons a goal on two consecutive corners just six minutes into the second frame, Wake Forest converted on the third penalty corner to gain a 1-0 advantage. Christine Conroe inserted the ball straight to Georgia Holland, who fired a shot towards the cage where Anna Kozniuk redirected the ball past Leytham.
Less than two minutes later, Wake Forest's Kali Vicars fired a shot from the right side of the circle past Leytham to extend the visiting team's lead to 2-0. The Demon Deacons eventually added a third score, a Kozniuk tally off a penalty stroke in the 68th minute of play to come up with the 3-0 final.
Leytham finished the second half with three saves. Wake Forest finished the game with a 24-0 advantage in shots and took 13 penalty corners.
Davidson will hit the field again Sept. 14 against Appalachian State, a 1 p.m. contest at Belk Turf Field.
