Davidson Falls 3-2 in Overtime to Appalachian State

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision in overtime to Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.

Sophomore Becca Jones and freshman Dodi Allocca found the back of the net for the Wildcats, who fall to 1-4 overall. Junior netminder Emily Leytham steered away seven shots on the afternoon.

The Mountaineers (2-4) found the back of the net with 3:36 remaining in the 15-minute overtime period. Laura Malinoski pulled Davidson's Emily Leytham out of position before laying the ball off in front of the cage where Taylor Cimbalist scored the game-winning goal to snap Appalachian State's four-game losing streak.

Davidson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half, before Appalachian State found the back of the cage to force overtime.

Becca Jones got things started for the Wildcats midway through the opening frame when Katherine English passed the ball from the end line to a wide open Jones in front of the cage who hit the top of the net to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.

Davidson extended its lead in the 33rd minute of the game, when Jones fired a shot that deflected off an Appalachian State defender. Allocca controlled the rebound and put the ball in the back of the goal for her first career score.

The Mountaineers responded with just 21 seconds left in the first half, when Micaela Diedericks found Jessi Stuart in front of the cage to cut Davidson's lead to one heading into halftime.

It was Stuart again in the 62^nd minute of play that evened the score 2-2 with just under eight minutes to play. Hanna French inserted the ball straight to Dana Wetmore, who fired a shot towards the goal. Stuart redirected the ball for her second tally of the game.

Appalachian State fended off two Davidson shots in the waning moments of regulation to force overtime, and ultimately won the contest, 3-2.

Davidson hits the road for its first Atlantic 10 contests, Saturday, Sept. 19 against La Salle before heading to Monmouth for a nonconference matchup Sunday, Sept. 21.
