DAVIDSON, N.C. – After thoroughly competing with then-No. 11 Wake Forest last Sunday, the Davidson field hockey team returns to Belk Turf Field for a clash with in-state rival Appalachian State.
About Davidson
Davidson posted a win last Saturday, taking down Rider, 2-1, for its first win at Belk Turf Field this season. The Wildcats handed the Broncs their second loss on the year with a well-executed plan of attack. Lucy Pidcock and Becca Jones each tallied a score in the win. Pidcock's deflection made it 1-0 early in the first half, before Jones found the back of the net to pad the Wildcats' lead in the 48th minute. As time expired, David was called for a foul and Rider converted a penalty stroke for the final score of 2-1.
Davidson was back on the field Sunday, where the Wildcats kept then No. 11 Wake Forest off the board through the first 35 minutes. Emily Leytham tallied six saves in the first half, before the Demon Deacons registered three goals to secure a win.
It's Leytham's Cage
Emily Leytham has played 245 minutes in goal for the Wildcats this season. The junior's 6.25 saves per game is 23rd in the nation and fifth in the A-10. The Charlottesville, Va., native has turned away 25 shots for a .735 save percentage, good enough for 33rd nationally and sixth in the league.
Leading the Wildcats
Three different Wildcats have found the back of the cage with sophomore Becca Jones leading the way with a pair of scores. Freshman Hannah Fisher and junior Lucy Pidcock round out the Davidson goal scorers with one tally each.
Last Time Against Appalachian State
Forward Anna Davis struck with 3:51 on the clock to end the sudden victory overtime period and hand the Davidson field hockey team a 4-3 win over the Mountaineers. Melissa Funsten, Anne Federico and Katherine English each added a goal in the win.
Scouting the Mountaineers
The Mountaineers (1-3) will look to snap a three-game losing streak when they welcome No. 20 James Madison to Boone, N.C., Friday, before traveling to Belk Turf Field on Sunday. Appalachian State is led by junior Taylor Cimbalist and Jordyn Warren, who each have two points on two goals to their credit. Cristina Ceppi has tallied 22 saves in goal for the Mountaineers.
All-Time Against Appalachian State
Davidson leads the all-time series against ASU, 39-28-2, dating back to 1977. Last season, the Wildcats dropped their first meeting with the Mountaineers in Boone, before handing their in-state rivals a 4-3 overtime loss at Belk Turf Field just a few weeks later.
Looking Ahead
Davidson will hit the road for its first Atlantic 10 conference game in Philadelphia, Pa., next weekend. The Wildcats will take on La Salle, Saturday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m., before heading to Monmouth the next day for a noon start.
