DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson wrapped a successful Fall invitational on its own hard courts Sunday as a trio of Wildcats finished 3-0 in singles and two doubles teams went undefeated as well on the final day of the Davidson Invitational at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Davidson played eight doubles and eight singles matches on the final day against Charlotte and USC-Upstate. Also completing its final invitational run of the day was Appalachian State.
"Really proud of the effort today," said head coach Drew Barrett. "It's great to see our hard work start to pay off. There is still a long road ahead, but it was good to see the results from this weekend."
In singles action, the trio of David Hager, Zack Zapatero and Evan Watkins were perfect on the weekend, with Hager earning a team-best 30 points. The freshman, playing at No. 4, finished out his last singles match with a solid 6-1, 6-1 victory over cross-county rival Charlotte. Saturday saw him cruise to a pair of straight set wins vs. App. State and USCU.
Zapatero finished with 18 points at No. 6 singles, closing his weekend out with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win vs. the 49ers.
Rounding out the three undefeated players was Watkins, who netted a 6-4, 7-5 triumph vs. Charlotte at No. 7 to earn 11 points on the weekend.
Also winning a singles match on the day was J.B. Gough and Alex Howard. Gough regrouped from dropping a pair of matches Saturday to score a 6-4, 6-2 win against his Charlotte opponent. Howard, in his only singles match of the weekend, nailed down a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 8 singles.
The freshmen duo of Artem Khrapko and Shamael Chaudhry were second and third, respectively, on the team in points. Khrapko ended his weekend in winning style, scoring a 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 win at No. 2 to end with 28 points.
Chaudhry was right behind him, closing with 21 points after dropping his last singles match vs. Charlotte Sunday.
Davidson went a combined 5-3 on the afternoon in doubles action. The pair of Zapatero and Hager, along with Gough and Hart, each went 2-0 on the day. Zapatero and Hager earned 8-3 and 8-1 wins at No. 2 vs. USC-Upstate and Charlotte to finish with a team-best 18 points.
Gough and Hart picked up 8-6 and 8-2 wins in their two doubles matches at No. 4 to tie Zapatero and Hager with a perfect 3-0 weekend. They earned six points total at the invite.
Davidson's last win on the day came from first-year player Jack Riazzi and Watkins, who earned an 8-2 decision vs. USCU before falling to Charlotte at No. 1 doubles.
The 'Cats turn around and will play next weekend, Oct. 3-5, at the Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.
