DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team battled throughout the afternoon as they opened the 2015 campaign against 24th-ranked Clemson, before falling 7-0 Saturday in the Knobloch Tennis Center.

"The guys played hard and fought to the end against a very good Clemson squad," said head coach Drew Barrett. "We have some things to work on, but it was a great start to the season for the team."

The Wildcats opened the match taking the doubles point down to the final match. After falling 6-1 at No. 3, the pair of Jordan Hart and J.B. Gough tied things up with a 6-3 win at No. 2. It all came to the top spot and the duo of Evan Watkins and Jack Riazzi went the distance, forcing a tie-breaker against the Tigers No. 1 team, which came in ranked 60th in the nation. Davidson fell 7-2 in the tie-breaker to give up the first point of the match.

Clemson carried that momentum onto singles action and swept all six positions, but the Wildcats gave the Tigers a run. In his first collegiate match, Shamael Chaudhry had a strong debut against No. 69 Hunter Harrington, winning a combined nine games before falling 6-4, 7-5.

Fellow classmates Artem Khrapko and David Hager also gave their Tiger opponents a challenge at No. 2 and 3. After falling 6-1 in his first set, Khrapko took his second set the distance in going to a tie-breaker before falling 7-2. Hager won three games each in his two sets.

Gough fell at No. 4 by the score of 6-3, 6-4, while Hart fell short in a 7-5, 6-3 defeat at No. 6 to Daniel Strawn.

Evan Watkins rounded out the Wildcat lineup, playing at No. 5 and falling in a 6-3, 6-1 match.

Davidson continues on with its four-match homestand to start the year by next playing Gardner-Webb, Feb. 4, at 5 p.m.
