Davidson Welcomes VCU to Open Atlantic 10 Slate

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team opens its Atlantic 10 slate when the Wildcats welcome Virginia Commonwealth to Belk Arena Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m.
Last Time Out
Davidson fell in straight sets to Winthrop Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Winthrop Coliseum. Michelle McNeight and Mikayla Derochie paced the offense with five kills each, while Emily Franklin registered five blocks. The Eagles took the match by set scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-15.
The Hitters
Davidson has benefited from a balanced offense as five different Wildcats have attempted at least 100 attacks with two of them averaging at least 2.00 kills per set. Hannah Rau leads the way with 2.69 kills per set, and is followed closely by Rachel Earnhardt, who has notched 2.12 kills per set. Mary Harriet Moore is averaging 1.39 kills per set, while her .298 hitting percentage is good for seventh in the Atlantic 10. Michelle McNeight and Emily Franklin have also contributed to the attack, averaging 1.74 and 1.39 kills per set, respectively.
Setting It Up
Sophomore Mikayla Derochie and freshman Katriana Romanelli have shared setting duties as the team has shifted into a 6-2 offensive system. Derochie has dished out 262 assists for an average of 7.28 per set to rank ninth in the Atlantic 10, while Romanelli has tallied 38 assists for a 2.71 average.
On the Block
Middle hitters, Emily Franklin, Mary Harriet Moore and Hannah Rau, have helped Davidson average 2.2 blocks per set through the first 10 matches of the year, good for fifth in the Atlantic 10. Franklin leads the team with 38 total blocks and is ninth in the Atlantic 10 with an average of 1.06 blocks per set. Both Moore and Rau have recorded 27 total blocks for an average of 0.75 and 0.77 blocks per set, respectively.
Series History: VCU
The Wildcats and Rams will meet for the seventh time in program history, with the Rams holding a commanding 5-1 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams last met in 2004, where the Wildcats dropped a hard-fought 3-2 battle to the Rams. Davidson's only win over VCU came in 1994, when the 'Cats earned a 3-2 win over the Rams.
Scouting the Rams
VCU defeated William & Mary Tuesday night to run its streak to four and improve to 6-7 overall. The Rams are led by Kalah Jones, who ranks seventh in the A-10 in kills per set with 3.09, and Janelle Sykes, who is averaging 2.96 kills per set, good for 10th in the conference as well as contributing 51 total blocks. Cecilia Aragao has dished out 9.36 assists per set, the seventh-highest average in the league, while Mary Kilbane has notched 3.77 digs per set.
