Davidson Suffers 3-1 Setback to VCU

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Michelle McNeight and Hannah Rau recorded 10 and 11 kills respectively as the Davidson volleyball team fell to Atlantic 10 foe Virginia Commonwealth University Saturday afternoon, 3-1, at Belk Arena. The Rams took the match by set scores of 17-25, 25-17, 25-13, 25-13.
The Wildcats finished with a season-high 11.5 total team blocks. Emily Franklin and Michelle McNeight led the way with three blocking assists, while Mary Harriet Moore, Rachel Earnhardt and Hannah Rau contributed two blocks. Rau added two solo blocks.
Behind McNeight and Rau's combined 21 kills, Emily Franklin and Rachel Earnhardt each chipped in five apiece on the attack.
VCU was led by Janelle Sykes who turned in 18 kills, while Kalah Jones added 13 kills and Libby Haslett notched 12 kills.
The two teams traded points throughout the early stages of the first set until a 7-0 stretch allowed the Wildcats to open an 18-10 advantage. VCU rallied with three straight points, but the damage was done as Davidson took the set, 25-17.
The teams found themselves tied at 14 midway through the second frame, but a 6-2 run allowed the Rams to open a 20-16 advantage. A Jessica Young kill and a service ace from Nora Reed gave VCU the set, 25-17.
Davidson was forced to play from behind in the third frame as VCU took an early 10-6 lead. An 8-0 stretch gave the Rams a 19-9 lead before a Reed kill secured the set for the visiting team, 25-13.
VCU took command of the match in the fourth set, sprinting out to a 21-10 lead, which turned into a 25-13 triumph.
Davidson returns to the court Oct. 3-5, as the Wildcats continue their Atlantic 10 slate with matches against Dayton and St. Louis.
