ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Davidson volleyball team dropped a match in straight sets to Winthrop Tuesday night. The Eagles took the match by set scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-15.
Michelle McNeight and Mikayla Derochie paced the offense with five kills each, while Emily Franklin registered five block assists. Winthrop was paced by Alina Sopizhuk and Emma Weakland who finished the night with 12 and nine kills respectively.
Franklin and McNeight notched three blocks early in the first set, but it wasn't enough as Winthrop jumped out to a quick 10-7 lead. A kill from McNeight evened the score at 14, before the two teams traded points down the stretch. Winthrop used a 5-0 run to open a 20-15 advantage, however, Davidson wouldn't go quietly as they battled back within three, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles secured the match, 25-20.
Winthrop's momentum continued in the second set as the Eagles opened a 17-10 advantage, before two kills from Sopizhuk gave Winthrop the set, 25-16.
Davidson was forced to play from behind in the third set, as Winthrop used a 10-4 run to take a 14-8 lead. Three consecutive Sopizhuk kills sealed the set 25-15 for the host.
Davidson return to the floor Friday, Sept. 27 at Belk Arena when the Wildcats open up Atlantic 10 conference play with a match against VCU.
