Wildcat Men's Tennis Opens Fall Season in Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. — The Davidson men's tennis team opened their 2014 Fall season at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on the campus of University of Georgia in Athens this past weekend.
Representing the Wildcats were J.B. Gough, Zack Zapatero, Jordan Hart and David Hager. Three of the four players each scored a singles win over the weekend.
Gough suffered a pair of defeats in the Division I bracket, falling to 14th-seeded Diego Nunez from East Tennessee State, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round and then dropping a 6-4, 6-4 decision to a player from Arkansas.
Zack Zapatero regrouped after falling 6-2, 7-6(3) in his first match in the Division II bracket, to score a nice 7-6(4), 1-6, 1-0(2) victory over Georgia Tech.
Joining his fellow classmate with a singles win was sophomore Hart. He got a bye into the round 16 in the Division III, before falling to Garrett Gordon of College of Charleston. He came back to score a 6-4, 6-3 win over Fernando Amon of ETSU.
Rounding out the singles players was freshman Hager, who played his first career collegiate Fall match against Elijah Melendez of Georgia Tech, falling 6-3, 6-4, in the Division III bracket. He came back with a strong 6-1, 6-0 win over cross-county rival Charlotte.
Teaming up in doubles action was Hart and Zapatero in the DI bracket, while Gough and Hager were on the DII side. Gough and Hager had the best showing, netting an 8-6 victory over a pair from Clemson, but saw their weekend halted in the round of 16 with an 8-2 defeat against Arkansas.
The Wildcats takes a week off before hosting the Davidson Invitational, Sept. 27-28, at the Covington Tennis Courts.
