Davidson Opens Wildcat Classic With 3-0 Loss to Wilmington

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team opened the Wildcat Classic Friday night at Belk Arena on the wrong end of a 3-0 score. Wilmington took the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-13.
Emily Franklin paced Davidson as the sophomore hit .429 with seven kills and two blocks, while Rachel Earnhardt had four kills, two blocks and four digs. Morgan Shannon led the defensive efforts with 18 digs. Mikayla Derochie and Katriana Romanelli split the setting duties, tallying 14 assists and three assists, respectively.
Wilmington was led by Morgan Kline who turned in 12 kills and Leah Gagliardi who tallied eight kills to go along with five block assists. Alyssa Desjardins dished out 17 assists with Morgan Owney adding 14 digs.
The first set featured four tied scores, but it was the Seahawks who would prevail, 25-18. With the score even at 10, the Seahawks used a 7-0 run to extend its lead, 17-10. The Wildcats went on a 7-2 run down the stretch but it wasn't enough to take the set.
The two teams traded points early in the final set, before the Seahawks found the upper hand, and used a 7-0 run to take the match 25-18. The Seahawks held the lead for nearly the entire third set and used a late 12-2 run to secure the set, 25-13.
Davidson returns to the floor tomorrow for the final day of the Wildcat Classic. The 'Cats take on Charlotte at noon before facing High Point at 7 p.m.
