DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson dropped two hard fought four-set matches to Charlotte and High Point on the final day of the Wildcat Classic. Davidson falls to 2-6 on the season.
The all-tournament was selected following the conclusion of the Wildcat Classic. Hannah Rau represented the Wildcats, while Irem Asci, Shelby Green and Britney Leigh Held represented Charlotte, which posted a 3-0 record. Wilmington's Morgan Kline and Meredith Peacock along with Haley Barnes of High Point each earned a spot on the team.
In the first match, Rau notched 18 kills, while Michelle McNeight had eight kills to lead the offensive effort. Morgan Shannon had 17 digs, while Emily Franklin had five block assists. Charlotte was paced by Tournament-MVP, Britney Leigh Held, who had nine kills and nine digs, while rookie Irem Asci finished the match with 18 kills and 12 digs.
The 'Cats jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before Charlotte battled back to even the match, 12-12. With Charlotte on top 22-21, Davidson rallied to tie the score four times when facing set point, but the 49ers eventually prevailed, taking the set 29-27. Davidson used a 10-2 run to hold a 19-11 advantage in the second frame. A service ace from Rachel Earnhardt and a kill from Kelly Friers made it 23-18 before an attack error gave the Wildcats set point, 25-20.
In the third, Charlotte jumped out to a 16-12 lead before Davidson used three consecutive kills to cut the deficit to one, but the 49ers went on a 4-0 run to secure the set, 25-22. Davidson was forced to play from behind in the final set as Charlotte opened a 12-19 margin. A 3-0 spurt by the Wildcats would not be enough as the 49ers held off the Wildcats for the 25-20 win.
Against High Point, Rau paced the offense with a double-double as the junior tallied 13 kills and 11 digs, while Kelly Friers turned in a .450 hitting percentage with 10 kills. Moore finished the night hitting .455 with six kills and two digs, while Mikayla Derochie had 23 assists. Barnes led High Point with 17 kills, while Kristin Heldt notched a double double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Chelsea Davis hit .345 with 12 kills
In the second match, Davidson jumped out to a 20-15 lead in the first, en route to a 25-17 victory. High Point responded in the second, however, as the Panthers took an 18-13 lead before Davidson pulled within four, 24-20, following a Friers kill but came no closer and eventually fell, 25-20.
High Point jumped out to an early 11-5 lead in the third set, and despite a 4-0 run down the stretch, the Panthers held on to win, 25-18. The Panthers continued its momentum taking a 13-5 lead in the fourth and led by as many as 10 points, 22-12 and the Wildcats could not outlast High Point, 25-16.
The Wildcats return to the floor Tuesday night with a trip to Rock Hill, S.C., to take on Winthrop.
