Backcourt Trio Named Men’s Basketball Captains
9/1/2014 10:43:00 AM | Men's Basketball
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson head men's basketball coach Bob McKillop announced today that Tyler Kalinoski, Brian Sullivan and Jack Gibbs have been named team captains for the 2014-15 season.
"Tyler, Brian and Jack set the tone for one of the most productive off-seasons our program has ever experienced," said McKillop, who is entering his 26th season at the helm. "Every day they consistently demonstrate leadership and set the pace to prepare us for taking the next step as we meet the challenges of the Atlantic 10 Conference."
Ranked among the nation's top 3-point shooters a year ago, Kalinoski led the Wildcats in minutes played (33.8 mpg), assists (111/3.6 apg), 3-point field-goal percentage (.455) and steals (42), while averaging 11.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
A senior from Overland Park, Kan., Kalinoski scored in double figures 19 times and posted a pair of double-doubles from his shooting guard position. His first career 10-point, 10-rebound performance came against nationally-ranked Virginia (11/16) when he scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Four games later, he flirted with a triple-double, recording 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in Davidson's win at Stetson (11/30).
Like Kalinoski, backcourt mates Sullivan and Gibbs were named to an all-conference squad last season.
Sullivan averaged 12.9 points, while shooting just under 40 percent from behind the 3-point arc. In addition, Sullivan made a SoCon-best 2.7 3-pointers per game and shot 46.2 percent from downtown against league competition.
For the season, the native of Upper Arlington, Ohio, hit double digits 19 times, including the 20-point mark on seven occasions and a 33-point game at North Carolina. Sullivan made four or more 3-pointers in a game nine times and led the team with 90 triples.
Just the sixth Wildcat to earn all-freshman honors, Gibbs appeared in 32 regular season contests off the bench last season averaging 6.8 points, 2.1 assists and 20.2 minutes per game, while shooting just under 80 percent at the charity stripe.
A 5-11 point guard from Westerville, Ohio, Gibbs led Davidson in assists seven times and scored in double figures 10 more, which included a 20-point effort at Stetson.
Coming off their third straight conference regular season title and ninth postseason appearance in the last 10 years, the Wildcats will open the season Nov. 15 against Catholic inside John M. Belk Arena.
