DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson swimmer Elise Lankiewicz received the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Honorable Mention Scholar All-America Award for excellence in the pool and in the classroom, the organization announced Monday.
The Honorable Mention Scholar All-America Award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the semester, or cumulative average, and have achieved a "B" time standard but did not qualify or compete in their respective national championship.
A rising sophomore, Lankiewicz enjoyed a spectacular rookie season. She won a conference championship in the 500-yard freestyle and set school records in the 200- (1:47.49), 500- (4:48.56), 1000- (10:13.62) and 1650-freestyle (16:53.77), the 200-butterfly (2:00.47), and the 100-backstroke (55.58) to lead off a record 400 medley relay effort. She contributed to four relay program records in total, including a new CCSA record in the 800 free relay (7:16.58). Lankiewicz's record 200 leadoff split of 1:47.49 in that race met the NCAA "B" standard.
Perhaps most impressively, Lankiewicz, a native of Wilmington, Del., and product of Wilmington Friends School, earned a 4.0 grade point average in the classroom.
"This recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America is an impressive finish to Elise's remarkable freshman season," said head coach John Young. "Not only did she establish herself as a dynamic and dependable teammate in competition, she accomplished our ideal by excelling in both the pool and the classroom. Davidson swimming and diving is proud of Elise, and exceedingly excited to witness her continued development as a student-athlete."
For her efforts, Lankiewicz garnered three team awards this past season: the Billy Ray High Point Award, Most Promising Freshman and Pat Miller Most Valuable Athlete, and was recognized as Davidson's top freshman athlete across all sports with the Helen DeVane Carnegie Award. She is a recipient of Davidson's prestigious Lowell L. Bryan Scholarship for top athletes and scholars, which is awarded to just one female and one male athlete in each first-year class.
Founded in 1922, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) – the oldest organization of college coaches in America -is a professional organization of college swimming and diving coaches dedicated to serving and providing leadership for the advancement of the sport of swimming at the collegiate level.
