'Cats Set for SoCon Outdoor Track Championships

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson men's track and field head coach Gary Andrew will guide the Wildcats in one last conference championship meet, as the 2014 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship is set for Saturday and Sunday, hosted by Wofford College at Spartanburg High School.
This will be the 90th annual Outdoor Track and Field Championship for the men. The championships will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. with the men's decathlon events, The awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday at 5 p.m. The event is free to the public. Andrew is retiring after the season, which is his 29th. It will also be Davidson's final appearance at the event, as they will compete in the Atlantic 10 next season.
The distance and middle distance events are where the Wildcats will be expected to earn their most points.
Senior Grayam Sailor-Tynes enters the meet as the highest ranked Wildcat in a single event, ranking third in the conference in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a personal best time of 9 minutes 21.24 seconds. Classmate Whitner Chase will look to break on to the podium in the 5,000-meter run, as he enters posting the fourth fastest time (14:41.43) in the SoCon this season.
Senior Andrew Lantz, the defending 800- and 1500-meter SoCon Champion, and sophomore Patrick Rollo will look to lead the 'Cats in the middle distance events. Lantz's mile time at Furman in his most recent outing converted to 3:49.93 in the 1500m, ranking him fourth in the event this season, but he holds the school record of 3:47.58.
Rollo is a threat to score in the Top 8 in both the 800m and 1500m, as he ranks eighth (1:53.42) and 10th (3:57.00), respectively.
Hurdler Charles Rappe could rack up the most points for the 'Cats, as he ranks fourth in both the 110- and 400- meter hurdles, with top times of 15.14 seconds and 54.56 seconds this season.
Stewart Dalton and Xzavier Killings could also total points in multiple events, as the duo both rank amongst the Top 8 in the long jump. Both posted personal-best jumps in their last outing at Winthrop, as Dalton leapt 22 feet, 8. ½ (6.92m) inches to rank fifth in the league, while Killings' mark at 22-6 ¼ (6.86m) ranks him seventh. Dalton is also Davidson's top 100-meter sprinter, with a top time of 10.95 seconds to rank eighth in the league. Killings sits 11th in the triple jump with a top effort of 43-3 (13.18m).
Freshman Jonathan Campbell will look to make a strong debut at the meet in the javelin, as his top throw of 162-7 (49.56m) ranks fourth in the league.
The 'Cats will also be counting on senior Michael Lorentsen in the pole vault, who enters ranking 11th at 14-1 ¼ (4.30m).
Western Carolina's men and women both took home SoCon titles at the 2013 championship. The Catamount men scored 222.5 points to earn the victory and edge second-place Samford by 13.5 points. Appalachian State finished third with 183.5 points, and Davidson took fourth with 70.5.
Samford (226.5) holds the top spot in the men's power rankings by a single point over Western Carolina (225.5), while Appalachian State sits at third with 139.5 points. The Citadel (77) and Furman (53) sit at fourth and fifth, respectively.
