DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson Wildcats were unable to overcome a late 3-0 run by Villanova in the second half in falling 8-6 at home on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse.
Davidson (1-5) had tied the game at 5-all with just over 12 minutes to play, but VU scored three straight over the next three and a half minutes to take control of the game and eventually the win.
Leading the way for Villanova (4-3) was Becca Hetrick and Shannon Galvin, who tallied five points each. The duo had eight of their 10 combined points in the second half to erase a one-goal halftime lead for Davidson at 3-2.
Hetrick had four goals, all in the second half, and added an assist, while Galvin had two goals and three assists. The pair combined for three goals and two assists in the opening 13 minutes of the second half to give VU a 5-3 lead.
Ann Fucigna had her second multi-goal game of the season, scoring a pair to pace the Wildcats, while Emma Sissman, Nicole Pettiglio, Mary Leonard and Annie Brokett each scored a goal.
Junior Emily Cook moved to within one assist of tying the all-time school record of 77 with Davidson's lone assist.
A steady rain fell for the entire game, forcing a slow pace for much the afternoon. Four minutes in, Brockett's first collegiate goal gave Davidson a 1-0 lead. VU came back with a pair of its own goals, before Sissman had her 10th goal of the season for a 2-2 game with 19:45 left in the half.
Fucigna gave the 'Cats a 3-2 lead heading into the break with a score 21 seconds before the halftime horn.
The senior later tied things up at 5-all with 12:03 on the clock after Hetrick and Galvin went on their scoring spree to give VU a brief 5-3 lead.
Davidson's defense had a solid day, coming up with a season-best 10 caused turnovers and 19 groundballs, second-most on the year. Goalie Katy Boyle (five saves) and defender Maddy Sivilli had a career-high three caused turnovers each. Paige Logan scooped up a season-high five groundballs, while Boyle and Rebecca Garman add three apiece.
Holding an edge in shots was Villanova at 15-13. Davidson pulled in nine draw controls compared to VU's seven.
The Wildcats remain at home and will play first-year program Elon, March 22, at 2 p.m.
