ROCK HILL, S.C. — Five Wildcats helped the Davidson men's tennis team wrap up its 2014 Fall season by playing at the Winthrop Invitational this past weekend at Memorial Courts.
Davidson played in three of the four singles flights and two of the three doubles flights. The invitational was cut short a day as weather forced all matches to not be played Saturday.
Artem Khrapko led the group in singles action, reaching the semifinals of the A singles flight. He opened with a pair of wins, including a 6-0, 6-3 triumph against Bryan Miller of Presbyterian. The freshman's weekend was halted there as he fell 6-3, 6-3 in the semis and then dropped another match to finish fourth overall.
In the B singles flight, Jordan Hart and Evan Watkins represented the 'Cats. Hart earned a 6-4, 6-2 win to reach the quarterfinals, but fell to his Presbyterian opponent in a hard-fought three-setter, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 to end his main draw run.
Watkins came back after falling in a first round match to Gardner-Webb to score a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Robert Jenkins of Appalachian State in a consolation match.
The pair of Alex Howard and David Hager were in the C singles flight. The junior Howard took a pair of matches, including a three-set match of 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in the first round. Hager also fell in his first round match, but regrouped with a 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 win against Eric Greene of the Mountaineers.
In doubles play, Howard and Khrapko won the consolation side of the C flight. After falling 8-4, the duo rattled off 8-3 and 8-4 wins in their next two matches against NCWC and Winthrop.
Hart and Waktins played in the B doubles flight, falling to UNC Asheville, 8-2, in their first round match and then dropping a close 8-7 decision in their consolation match.
Davidson begins its Spring season at home against Atlantic Coastal Conference-foe Clemson, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m.
