ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Davidson women's volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Atlantic 10 foe St. Louis Sunday afternoon at Chaifetz Pavilion.
Davidson earned the victory by set scores of 21-25, 9-25, 25-20, 25-23 and 18-16 to earn its first conference win of the season.
Hannah Rau led the attack with a season-high 17 kills as Rachel Earnhardt notched 11 kills, Emily Franklin had nine kills and Mary Harriet Moore and Kelly Friers added six apiece. Franklin also contributed seven total blocks, while Moore finished her night hitting a team-high .857 to go with seven total blocks. Morgan Shannon added 24 digs to help limit St. Louis to a .190 hitting percentage.
Josie Gandall (13 kills, 17 digs) and Nenye Okoro (16 kills, 15 digs) each registered a double-double for Saint Louis, while Lauren Leverenz and Megan Gilbert turned in 16 and 15 kills respectively. Nicole Sniffen had eight total blocks for the Billikens.
The two teams traded points early in the opening set, before Davidson used a 6-2 run to open a 13-10 lead. Saint Louis battled back to even the score at 21, before a Wildcat error and a Gilbert smash put the Billikens up by two, 23-21, and a 2-0 stretch gave the hosts the win, 25-21.
Saint Louis controlled the second set to take a commanding 2-0 lead. The Billikens opened a 17-7 edge late, before a 9-2 stretch helped secure the set for Saint Louis, 25-9.
Kills by Rau and Earnhardt to open the third put Davidson in front, 2-0, before Saint Louis rallied to take an 8-7 advantage. Tied at 13, kills from Friers and Earnhardt put the Wildcats ahead, 16-13, before Davidson used a 4-2 stretch to take the third set by a score of 25-20.
Davidson built a five-point lead early in the fourth thanks to kills from Rau and Franklin. Saint Louis battled back and went in front 19-18 on a Meredith Boe kill. A Billikens error put the teams on even ground, before Rau gave the Wildcats a 23-22 lead with a smash on the next point. A service error gave the Billikens the ball, but a block from Michelle McNeight and Moore put the frame away, 25-23 to force a fifth set.
The fifth and final set was another good one as the frame featured 15 tied scores and four lead changes. With the score even at 15, a Megan Gilbert kill put Saint Louis ahead by one, before three consecutive Billikens errors gave the Wildcats the frame 18-16.
Davidson returns to action Oct. 10-13 when the Wildcats welcome Duquesne and La Salle to Belk Arena.
