CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Davidson men's tennis team over the weekend sent four players to the competitive 13th edition of the University of Virginia Fall Tennis Classic at the Snyder Tennis Center, Oct. 3-5. There were 18 schools that competed at the tournament over the three-day stretch.
Representing the Wildcats in both singles and doubles were the freshmen trio of Shamael Chaudhry, Artem Khrapko and David Hager along with sophomore J.B. Gough.
Leading the way in singles was Hager, who went 2-1. He started off with 6-2, 6-1 win vs. Old Dominion in the Gold singles bracket. After falling in a hard-fought three-setter (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) to Florin Radu of Princeton, the freshman came back to pick up a strong 6-0, 6-2 win against his Bucknell opponent in the fifth place bracket.
Chaundhry regrouped from dropping his first two matches of the weekend to close out with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the top singles bracket, the Blue draw. Khrapko started his Friday off with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph against Jimmy Lange of George Mason in the Orange singles draw. He dropped his next two matches, including a tough 5-7, 6-3, 10-5 decision on Sunday to Liberty's Dillon Segur.
Gough opened his weekend with an impressive three-set thriller, coming back from falling in the first set, 6-1, to net 6-3 and 7-5 victories in the next two sets against Radford's Michell Meekers. He was then tripped up in the next round, falling in another three set affair by the scores of 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to James Madison. Gough ended the weekend with a 6-2, 6-3 setback to Igor Braga of Norfolk State.
In doubles play, the duo of Chaundhry and Khrapko earned a third place showing in the Gold doubles draw. They started off with an 8-5 triumph against a pair from UMBC, before falling to William & Mary's doubles team, 8-4. The freshmen pair came right back though to net a well-played 8-7 (5) decision against James Madison for third place.
The other doubles team of Gough and Hager concluded the weekend with an 8-6 win over The Citadel in the Blue doubles draw on the consolation side. They had fallen 8-4 and 8-5 in their first two matches of the weekend to VCU and Cornell.
Davidson next heads to the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., Oct. 10-12.
