DAYTON, Ohio – A pair of second-half goals less than three minutes apart lifted Dayton to a 2-0 victory over Davidson in both team's Atlantic 10 men's soccer opener on a cold Saturday evening at Baujan Field.
"Dayton is a tough team and very hard to beat on their field," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "Their energy grew as the game progressed. And you add that it's a conference game and they could knock off an unbeaten ranked team. They were very up for the battle."
The Wildcats, who entered ranked as high as 15th in the polls and just one of four unbeaten teams left in the country, fall to 5-1-2 overall while the Flyers improve to 5-3-2.
"We started the game well and created some quality opportunities especially down the right side. And we created two point-blank chances in the second half, plus a great shot by Shane Macnamara -- all saved by their keeper, who had a good night. But we lacked the precision tonight in the final pass and in shooting."
Greg Estone scored the eventual game-winner at the 53:42 mark when he found the net with a header from just outside the six-yard box off a long cross from Dillon Nino.
In the 57th minute, Dayton's Ryan Peterson played a centering pass to Kissima Bojang, who slipped a shot past Davidson's Matt Pacifici into the lower left corner to make it a two-goal contest.
"The environment was tough - windy, temperatures in the 40's and the pitch played thick and bumpy. So the style of the match was choppy, direct, and physical," Spear commented.
Pacifici led both keepers with five saves for the Wildcats.
Davidson will continue conference play Friday, Oct. 10 when No. 8 Saint Louis visits Alumni Stadium for a 7 p.m. match.
