CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Davidson women's soccer team got their final season in the Southern Conference underway in winning fashion by taking a 3-2 road win at Chattanooga Friday evening in Findley Stadium.
The Wildcats (2-5-3, 1-0 SoCon) captured their 10th victory in a row vs. the Mocs (4-4, 0-1 SoCon) to improve to 18-1-1 all-time in the series. They also improved to 14-5-1 in SoCon openers and 8-4 when playing those games on the road.
Down 1-0 just four minutes into the game, Davidson regrouped and rattled off three straight goals, including a goal and assist from Becca Fisher, on its way to earning its second win in a row.
Fisher scored the Wildcats' first goal at the 11:43 mark when she got a pass from Stephanie Piperno inside the six-yard box and fired off a shot to the right side for her ninth career goal to tie things up.
Less than ten minutes later, the junior helped the 'Cats get on the board again. This time Fisher crossed in a pass to Julia Singley, who turned and shot one from 10 yards out to make it 2-1. It was Singley's ninth career goal and first of the season.
Sarah Tuggle finished off the winning rally by getting the game-winner in the 62nd minute when she beat Chattanooga's Taylor Mangrum, who came out to cover in goal, bouncing the ball off the keeper and into the empty net. The score was the first career goal for the sophomore.
Chattanooga cut the deficit to one, 3-2, on Crystal Mackezyk's fifth goal of the season off a corner kick at the 79:46 mark. Davidson's defense though shut down the Mocs the rest of the way, holding them without a shot in the final 10 minutes to secure the win.
Rachel Locke earned the win in goal with three saves, while Mangrum had nine for UTC.
Davidson dominated in the shot department, taking 20 shots and putting 12 on frame compared to seven shots for the Mocs and five on frame. The Wildcats also held an 8-2 advantage on corners.
The 'Cats look to make it three straight when they wrap up a two-game SoCon road swing with a 2 p.m. contest at Samford Sunday.
