DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Wildcats wrap up a quick two-game homestand when they welcome cross-county rival Charlotte Sunday evening under the lights at Alumni Stadium in women's soccer. It's the Wildcats' second-to-last non-conference opponent of the season.
The Matchup
Playing just once this week, Davidson gears up to face its cross-county rival in the 49ers Sunday, Sept. 22, under the lights with game time set for 6 p.m.   Â
The All-Time Series
This will be the 18th meeting between the Wildcats and 49ers. Davidson, which trails 4-11-2 in the series, has earned a result in each of the last two meetings, getting a 1-1 tie in 2011 at home and then it earned a 1-0 road win last year. A year ago, Becca Fisher headed in the game-winner in the 53rd minute and Davidson's defense played shutout ball the rest of the way for the win.         Â
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson (0-5-3), seeking their first victory of the campaign, dropped a pair of contests last weekend, falling on the road, 2-1, at Winthrop, before dropping a 2-0 decision at home vs. James Madison on Sunday ... JMU and Davidson had not faced each other since 1991 ... sophomore defender Dani Johnson scored the 'Cats' first goal of the season on a penalty kick at Winthrop ... it was the second of her young career ... Davidson saw its four-game unbeaten streak come to an end in the series vs. the Eagles ... Rachel Locke stopped a combined eight shots last weekend, giving her 43 saves on the year ... she is second in the SoCon in saves, while in a three-way tie for first with three shutouts ... Fisher leads the team with 18 shots through eight games, tied for seventh-most in the SoCon ... both Locke and Fisher were named to the all-tournament team at the FGCU Embassy Suite Classic, Aug. 30-Sept. 1 ... after Sunday's game vs. the 49ers, Davidson's last non-conference foe will be Francis Marion, Oct. 13, on the road ... the Wildcats are 0-3-1 at home so far this year ... Davidson was picked to finish fourth in the 2013 SoCon preseason poll ... the Wildcats return 21 letterwinners, including 10 starters ... head coach Greg Ashton enters his 10th season and needs just five more victories to reach 100 for his career at Davidson ... the soccer program, which was started in 1989, is celebrating its 25th Anniversary throughout the year with the main festivities coming Oct. 18-20 against UNCG and Elon. Scouting the 49ers
Charlotte (4-2), which faces College of Charleston at home Friday night, is coming off a 3-2 defeat to James Madison on the 13th ... Amanda Jones and Jessica Ryan scored the two goals for the 49ers ... Alex Kubrick had three saves in goal ... Jones paces the team with three goals and six points ... Maddie Kiebel has a team-high two assists ... Alex Kubrick has started all six games between the pipes, registering a 0.97 goals against average to go with 27 saves ... she has tallied three shutouts, coming against Liberty (1-0, double-overtime), UNC Wilmington (1-0) and Western Caorlina (1-0) ... Kubrick was named C-USA Player of the Week Aug. 26, while Jones was named to the TopDrawSoccer.com National Team of the Week, Aug. 27 ... Jones was tabbed a Player to Watch in C-USA preseason poll ... the 49ers are coming off a 10-8-2 record a year ago and went 4-4-1 in the Atlantic 10 ... head coach John Cullen enters his fifth season at the helm ... he's the fourth head coach in the program's 20-year history and has collected 53 wins (53-28-8).
Next on the Schedule
Davidson finishes out the month of September by opening Southern Conference play at Chattanooga and Samford the 27th and 29th. Game times are set for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m.
The 'Cats have dominated the Mocs, winning the last eight straight and owning a 17-1-1 all-time mark. They are 1-2-3 in the series vs. the Bulldogs, dating back to 2008.
