Track & Field Adds Meets to Improve NCAA Qualifying Times

Road to the NCAA Championship

DAVIDSON, N.C. –
Andrew Lantz, Vincent Weir and Demetrios Pagonis will compete in additional meets looking to improve their chances of qualifying for the NCAA East Region Championships, head coach Gary Andrew announced Monday.

Lantz is slated to compete in the 800-meter run at the Bob Pollock Invitational at Clemson Friday and the 1500-meter run at the Duke Twilight Sunday. Lantz is expected to be joined by Weir at Duke, who will compete in the steeplechase. Select runners from the Davidson women's team will also compete at Duke.

Lantz, Weir, and Pagonis are then all planning on competing in the Virginia Challenge Saturday, May 11. Lantz will compete in either the 800m or 1500m, while Weir will run the steeplechase and Pagonis will run the 5000-meter run.

The deadline for running an eligible qualifying time is May 12. The student-athletes that have posted season-best times that rank in the Top 48 of their respective event(s) and declare to compete in them qualify for the two NCAA regional championship meets (East and West). The list of student-athletes, by event, who have been accepted to compete in each preliminary championships competition will be announced on Thursday, May 16, by 1 p.m. ET.

Of the Davidson competitors, Pagonis is most assured of having a place in the East Region meet, as his 10,000-meter run time of 29:32.58 ranks 20th. He is also close to being eligible in the 5000m, as his time of 14:09.96 ranks 52nd. Both marks are school records.

Lantz is on the bubble in the 800m, presently ranking 38th in 1:50.23. His season-best 1500m time is 3:50.31, but he holds the school record at 3:47.66. If he can reach that career-best 1500m time, he could earn a place in that field, as well.

Weir presently ranks 52nd in the steeplechase with a top time of 9:08.72, which is less than a tenth-of-a-second shy of the current 48th-place time.

Lantz and Pagonis are coming off stellar performances at the Southern Conference Track & Field Championships, in which Lantz claimed both the 800m and 1500 championships, and Pagonis claimed the 5000m and 10,000m titles.

Andrew, who is in his 26th season guiding the Wildcats, is looking to send multiple student-athletes who have qualified strictly on time to the NCAA Regionals for the first time in program history. The Wildcats have sent multiple competitors in the past, but they had qualified by virtue of winning individual Southern Conference Championships. Conference champions no longer receive automatic bids.

Davidson was represented at last year's East Regional by Ryan Hopkins '12 in the 10,000-meter run. Hopkins was the first Wildcat to ever qualify for the NCAA meet strictly on time.

The 2013 NCAA East Region Championships will be contested May 23-25 in nearby Greensboro, N.C. at North Carolina A&T. The Top 12 runners in each event advance to the finals hosted by Oregon, June 11-14.
