STATESBORO, Ga. – Junior Andrew Lantz won both the 800- and 1500-meter runs and senior Demetrios Pagonis completed the “distance double” by adding the 5000-meter run title Sunday to lead Davidson to a fourth-place finish at the 2013 SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Eagle Track & Field Complex at Erk Russell Athletic Park.

The four individual titles were the most for the Wildcats since 2007 when they also scored four. Pagonis (5000m and 10,000m), Lantz (800m and 1500m), sophomore Whitner Chase (5000m) and freshman Daniel Samet (10,0000m) combined to give Davidson six all-conference performances. Samet (5000m and 10,000m), Xzavier Killings (triple jump) and Charles Rappe (400m hurdles) represented the Wildcats on the SoCon All-Freshman team.

The Western Carolina men and women claimed the 2013 SoCon Outdoor Track & Field Championships The Catamount men finished with a total of 222.5 points and were followed by Samford (209 points), Appalachian State (183.5) and Davidson (70.5). The Citadel rounded out the top five with 55 points.

“It was an awesome day with Andrew dominating the middle distance events and Demetrios dominating the distance events,” said head coach Gary Andrew. “We had so many great performances with guys picking up points to help us battle with The Citadel for fourth. It was an exciting day.”

Lantz went to the top of the podium twice Sunday to complete a busy weekend. He qualified for the 800m finals Saturday, won the 1500m Sunday in 3 minutes, 50.31 seconds following some controversy, and then, just an hour-and-a-half later, defended his 800m title by running the third fastest time in Davidson history of 1:50.62. UNCG's Paul Chelimo crossed the line first in the 1500m, but was disqualified for illegally impeding Lantz and preventing him from passing. Chelimo protested the decision, but it was upheld. Lantz was able to put the controversy aside and run a smart race in the 800m, going from dead last at the halfway point to first on the final lap to win by 0.68 seconds.

Lantz becomes Davidson's first ever two-time 800-meter run champion and the fourth 1500-meter run champion.

Pagonis and Chase gave Davidson a pair of podium finishers in the 5000m, as Pagonis won in 14:35.84 and Chase ran a personal best 14:47.17 to place third and earn a place on Davidson's all-time top-10 performers list.

Pagonis' time ranked as one of the top-10 best in Davidson history, and he becomes the first Wildcat to ever win both the 5000m and 10,000m titles. In fact, Ryan Hopkins '12 earned Davidson's first-ever outdoor SoCon title in the 5K last season. Pagonis is also the first runner to sweep the 5K and 10K at the SoCon Championships since Appalachian State's Phil Mitchell in 2010. On the first day of competition Saturday, Pagonis broke the facility record in the 10,000m with a time of 31:15.65 seconds.

He was joined on the podium by Samet, who took third in 31:25.98, and senior Wes Reynolds also finished in the scoring group in sixth in 31:34.53. Reynolds nearly broke into the scoring in the 5000m Sunday, placing one spot out in ninth in 15:01.27.

Other points Sunday came from Rappe, who took seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in 55.89 seconds, and the relay teams, which both placed sixth. The 4x100-meter team of Michael Lorentsen, Killings, Stewart Dalton and Cyrus Bahram finished in 43.44 seconds, and the 4x400-meter team of Rappe, Wesley Laytham, Sal del Giudice and Nate Faubion finished in a season-best 3:24.76.

Killings also competed in the triple jump and high jump Sunday, leaping 44 feet, 4 ¾ inches (13.53) in the former to place just outside the scoring in ninth. He cleared 6 feet, 1 ¼ inches (1.86m) in the high jump to tie for 11th.

On Saturday in the field events, the Wildcats earned two more sixth-place finishes. Dalton took sixth in the long jump with a top leap of 22 feet, ¾ inch (6.72m), while classmate Lorentsen did the same in the pole vault, clearing a personal best and Davidson all-time top-10 best 14 feet, 3 ¼ inches (4.35m).

Senior Vincent Weir also scored points for the Wildcats with a seventh-place finish in the steeplechase in a Davidson all-time top-10 time of 9:23.20.

Pagonis, Lantz and Weir will continue to compete in various qualifying meets in their respective events to improve their chances of qualifying for the NCAA East Regionals, to be held May 23-25 in North Carolina A&T in Greensboro. The top 48 declared runners in each event qualify. Of the three, Pagonis is most comfortably in, ranking 18th in the region in the 10,000-meter run with a top time of 29:32.58. He's on the bubble in the 5000m, ranking 46th at 14:09.96. Lantz is presently above the cutline for the 800m, ranking 37th in 1:50.23. Weir is in a similar position in the 3000-meter steeplechase, ranking 40th at 9:08.72.
