SoCon Championship Central
Weekend Schedule
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Andrew Lantz, Demetrios Pagonis and Vincent Weir will look to lead the Davidson men's track and field team at the 2013 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Saturday and Sunday at Georgia Southern University.
The trio of distance runners hold times ranking in the top two in the league this season in their respective events.
It will be the 89th running of the men's SoCon Championship. The championships will begin Saturday at 8:00 a.m. with the men's decathlon events, followed by the women's heptathlon events at 8:30 a.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday at 5:45 p.m.
The event is free to the public. Live results, daily recaps, daily photos and video highlights can be found on the Southern Conference website.
The Appalachian State men and women took the titles in 2012. It was the third consecutive title for the Mountaineer men. Davidson placed fifth, but finished fourth at the 2013 indoor championships in February.
Twenty-one student-athletes return to this year's championships to defend their 2012 individual titles, including 10 on the men's side. One of those is Wildcat junior Andrew Lantz, who will look to defend his title in the 800-meter run. Lantz won the title in 1:54.06 last season, and his season best and school record time of 1:50.23 is tops in the Southern Conference by over one second.
Pagonis will look to lead Davidson in the distance events as he has posted the second-fastest times in the league in both the 5000- and 10,000-meter runs. Pagonis opened the outdoor season with a school-record performance in the 5000m (14:09.96) at the Charlotte 49er Classic and also set a 10K record (29:32.58) at the Stanford Invitational. Senior Wes Reynolds ranks just outside the Top 10 in the 5K this year with a top time of 14:54.25, and will look to break into the scoring group.
Weir, also a senior, broke the Davidson 3000-meter steeplechase record with a time of 9:08.72 at the Duke Invitational, finishing just behind Furman's Wilkerson Given who was four-hundredths of a second quicker. Those two times are the quickest in the league this year, so the steeplechase could be one of the most hotly contested events of the meet.
Junior Stewart Dalton will be a contender in the long jump, ranking sixth this season with a top leap of 22 feet, 5.25 inches (6.84m). Freshman Charles Rappe will look to score points in the 400-meter hurdles, as his top performance of 54.86 seconds ranks him seventh in the SoCon.
Freshman Xzavier Killings has been Davidson's most versatile athlete this year as the 'Cats' top sprinter, high jumper and triple jumper. His highest ranking is in the triple jump, where his top mark of 44-6 (13.56m) places him seventh in the league.
Junior Michael Lorentsen enters the meet ranked 10th in the pole vault, while the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams will look to earn top-five finishes.
In the most recent power rankings, which include meets through April 19, Western Carolina leads the men's side with a four-point advantage over Appalachian State, followed closely by Samford. Davidson ranks fourth.
The rankings are determined by the top eight times or scores that are reported by the schools for each event that will be conducted at this weekend's championships.
