DAVIDSON, N.C. — Riding a school-best seven-game win streak, the Davidson women's lacrosse team puts its streak on the line when it hosts nationally ranked Duke Wednesday evening at Richardson Stadium in the 'Cats final home contest of the regular season.
The Opening Draw Control
Davidson (9-5, 6-0 Big South) wraps up its non-conference slate of games by hosting No. 9 Duke (9-4, 2-3 ACC) Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Wildcats are looking to reach the 10-win mark for just the second time in program history.
The Wildcats' school-record seven-game win streak has come against Longwood (17-7), Lafayette (17-13), Liberty (12-5), Campbell (18-3), Presbyterian (19-3), High Point (11-9) and Coastal Carolina (18-8). During the streak, five of the wins have come at home.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The 'Cats are still seeking their first win in the all-time series vs. the Blue Devils, trailing 10-0 since first meeting them in 1996. Duke took the last meeting in 2010, a 19-6 win at home. It raced out to a 10-1 lead and Davidson never recovered.
Quick Hits...
During the Streak
Davidson's 18-8 win last Sunday at Coastal Carolina set a new program-best with its seventh straight win. During the win streak, the 'Cats have averaged 16 goals a game, while limiting the opposition to just under seven a game. They have hit 15-of-29 free-position shots and collected an average of 15 draw controls and 19 groundballs a game. The defense has also forced 44 total turnovers.
Ann Fucigna leads the offense with 26 goals in the seven games, while Emily Cooke has 26 assists to go with 13 goals for 39 points. Alanna Parker has tallied 21 goals, and added 12 groundballs and 14 draw controls.
Emma Sissman (12 goals) leads the way with 27 draw controls, while Paige Logan has a team-high 17 groundballs and Abigail Doelger has nine caused turnovers. Goalie Jessica Melby has been stout between the pipes, holding the opponent to a 6.86 goals against average. She also has 43 saves and 11 groundballs.
Record Watch, Closing in on More Records
Fucigna will look to set the all-time points mark on Wednesday after tying it Sunday in the win at Coastal Carolina. The junior, who had four points in Sunday's win, has 185 career points (146 goals, 39 assists) and is tied with Amanda Fleck (185, 1996-99).
Cooke is close to breaking another record this year, needing just four more points to pass Fucigna's single-season mark of 74 set last year. The sophomore has already set the single-game (10) and single-season (45) mark for assists, while she tied the single-game for points with 11 in a win vs. Kennesaw State.
Alanna Parker is climbing the record charts as she has 131 goals, good for third place, while her 151 career points is sixth-best. The senior is the school's record-holder with 124 career draw controls.
Fellow senior Erin McGuire ranks fifth all-time in the draw controls category with 93. Freshman Sissman is second in single-season draw controls with 55.
Senior goalie Melby ranks third all-time with 378 saves and her 2,926 minutes between the pipes is good for third-most in the Wildcat record books. Her 8.16 goals against average is currently best-ever in a single-season.
Weekly Honors
Senior Melby and junior Fucigna have collected Big South Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week this year. Melby was honored with the defender of the week, April 1, while Fucigna twice has captured the offensive player of the week, March 12 & April 8.
Last Time Out For Davidson ...
Junior Ann Fucigna tied the program's all-time points record as she was one of seven Wildcats with multiple goals on the day and Davidson picked up its school-record seventh straight win behind an 18-8 victory on the road at Coastal Carolina.
Emily Cooke, who earlier set the single-season and single-game assist marks, and tied the single-game record for points, moved to within three points of tying Fucigna's single-season points record as she had two goals and three assists in the win to give her 71 points.
Davidson broke the previous best winning streak of six by using a 10-0 run to close out the first half and open the new half after falling behind 3-1 in the early stages of the game.
