DAVIDSON, N.C. — Undefeated in league play and riding a season-high five game win streak, Davidson looks to stay hot when it plays host to rival High Point Friday night at 6 p.m. in a key Big South matchup at Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse.
The Opening Draw Control
Davidson (7-5, 4-0 Big South) wraps up a three-game homestand by taking on the High Point Panthers Friday evening, April 12 in a battle of unbeatens in Big South play. The Panthers are tied with the 'Cats atop the standings at 4-0 and sit at 6-6 overall.
The Wildcats' five-game win streak is one away from the school-best. They have scored wins vs. Longwood (17-7), Lafayette (17-13), Liberty (12-5), Campbell (18-3) and Presbyterian (19-3) during the streak, getting four of the five wins at home.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series is 3-0 in favor of High Point since both teams first met in 2011. Last year saw Davidson drop both of its games against the Panthers, including a close 13-11 semifinal contest in the NLC Tournament.
In that game, Davidson made a valiant effort at a comeback after training 13-7 following a free-position goal by High Point's Kendyl Gardner seven minutes into the second half. The Wildcat defense held the Panthers off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest, and the offense got going, scoring four straight to make the margin 13-11, but went scoreless the last seven minutes.
Ann Fucigna scored four goals to set a new Davidson single-season record in the defeat, giving her 51 for the year.
Record-Setting Weekend
It was a record-setting weekend last week, April 5 and 7, for Fucigna and Emily Cooke. Friday night vs. Campbell, the duo put their names atop the record books in the all-time goals and single-season assists categories. With her fourth and final goal of the game in the second half, Fucigna broke the all-time goals mark with her 135th score. Cooke continued her outstanding sophomore campaign by setting the single-season mark for assists with her third of the game to give her 30. She closed out the game with eight points, two off her career-high 10 she registered in a win vs. Kennesaw State earlier this year.
Fucigna was not done for the weekend, tying the single-game record for goals with eight in the 'Cats' win vs. Presbyterian. She tied Lauren Kenchington's mark that had been held since 2000.
Record Watch, Closing in on More Records
Fucigna will look to make it another memorable weekend as she has a chance to set the all-time points mark. The junior has 181 career points (143 goals, 38 assists), which puts her second all-time in the Wildcat record books and just five away from breaking the all-time mark of Amanda Fleck (185, 1996-99).
Alanna Parker is also climbing the record charts as she has 126 goals, good for third place, while her 146 career points is sixth-best. The senior is also second all-time with 113 career draw controls.
Fellow senior Erin McGuire ranks fifth all-time in the darw control category with 92. Sophomore Cooke, the record-holder already in single-season assists, is fifth in points with 58 (23 goals, 35 assists) and her 43 career assists is good for fifth as well. Freshman Emma Sissman is tied for second in single-season draw controls with 51.
Senior goalie Jessica Melby ranks fourth all-time with 365 saves and her 2,826 minutes between the pipes is good for third-most in the Wildcat record books.
Weekly Honors
Senior Melby and junior Fucigna have collected Big South Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week this year. Melby was honored with the defender of the week, April 1, while Fucigna twice has captured the offensive player of the week, March 12 & April 8.
Last Time Out For HIgh Point ...
... High Point — The High Point women's lacrosse team pulled away for a 15-8 win over Liberty, improving to 4-0 in Big South play last Sunday afternoon at High Point.
Junior midfielder Alec Perry led the Panthers with four goals and five draw controls. Perry has scored in every game this season and now has 23 goals on the season.
