Second Half Comeback Falls One Goal Short for ‘Cats, 13-12

DAVIDOSN, N.C. – Emily Cooke and Ann Fucigna combined for five goals and seven points in the second half, and Davidson nearly came back from a 9-3 deficit, before No. 13 Dartmouth held off the Wildcats' upset bid, 13-12, Tuesday evening at Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse.

The 'Cats (2-5) outscored the Big Green 9-4 in the second period, but ran out of time in trying to close out the comeback. Fucigna's last goal of the half for Davidson came right before the final horn to make it a one-goal score.

Dartmouth's (5-2) Sarah Byrne scored the winning goal with 9:51 left to give the Big Green a 13-9 lead. She was one of four players to score a pair of goals. Hanna Bowers had a team-high four points on two goals and two assists.

Cooke finished with six points on three goals and three assists, getting all three goals and two of the assists in the second half. Fucigna was right behind her with four points on three goals and an assist.

The duo have been an offensive force this year, combining for 33 of the Wildcats' 76 goals, while picking up 22 assists, 19 by Cooke, for 55 points.

Emily Rademacher netted a pair of goals. The sophomore got the attempted rally going with a free-position shot to open the second half. She made the score 10-6 with another goal later at the 21:12 mark.

Cook then had her hand in the next three Wildcat goals, including back-to-back scores within 22 seconds of each other to make it 12-9 with 12:03 remaining.

Paige Logan, Cooke and Fucigna finished out the scoring for the 'Cats.

The first half saw Dartmouth score five of the first six goals and went into the break up 9-3 as it dominated the half. The Big Green picked up 16 shots and nine draw controls in the half.

Davidson closed the gap in the second half in shots, finishing with 15 to give it 22 for the game compared to Dartmouth's 25. The Wildcats also pulled in 10 of its game-high 14 draw controls in the second half, helping fuel their near comeback. Emma Sissman had a team-best five of them, pushing her total to 28 on the season.

The Big Green hauled in 23 groundballs to Davidson's 10. Three different Dartmouth players had three apiece.

Goalie Jessica Melby earned six saves, while the Big Green's Kristen Giovanniello was credited with three.

Davidson continues its three-game homestand with a 3 p.m. contest against Longwood as the Wildcats open up Big South play this Saturday, March 23. Both teams previously played in the National Lacrosse Conference together.
