Layup Line
• For the second time on the young season, Davidson will take on a nationally-ranked opponent when it hosts No. 25 Virginia at Time Warner Cable Arena on Saturday.
• The Wildcats enter 0-2 after suffering an 81-77 setback to Milwaukee Monday evening at Belk Arena.
• After the opening week of the season, three Wildcats are averaging double figures, led by seniors De'Mon Brooks and Tom Droney, who are both contributing 19 points per game.
• Coming into the season, Droney hadn't scored more than 14 points in a contest. He opened with 16 at Duke before pouring in 22 against Milwaukee.
• Saturday's game is the first of six straight away from home for Davidson.
• Davidson is 14-84 all-time when playing a ranked opponent (AP?Poll) and has lost 13 of its last 14.
• The Wildcats last win over a ranked opponent came on Dec. 19, 2011 when they defeated then-ranked No. 12/11 Kansas, 80-74, in Kansas City.
• Next week, the Wildcats will take part in the Charleston Classic (Nov. 21, 22 & 24) for the second time in the last five years.
• The Wildcats will play Georgia on day one of the sixth annual event.
• In addition to its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 12th overall, Davidson finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 26-8 record, marking the fifth time in the last seven seasons the Wildcats have posted 25 or more wins.
• Davidson concluded the 2012-13 season with 17 straight wins before falling to Marquette, 59-58, at the buzzer, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
• The Wildcats were picked to finish second in the SoCon preseason poll by both the media and head coaches.
• Davidson returns nine letterwinners from last year's squad, including Brooks, who was selected the Southern Conference Preseason Player of the Year.
• Brooks, the 2011 SoCon Player of the Year (coaches) and two-time Tournament MVP, averaged 13.7 points and 6.2 rebounds a year ago, while shooting 50 percent from the floor.
• Bob McKillop, who is the eighth longest-tenured coach in the country, is in his 25th season at the helm of the Wildcats.
• McKillop is the school's and league's all-time winningest coach with a record of 452-281.
• A year ago, McKillop was named SoCon Coach of the Year for a record ninth time.
• With last season's NCAA?Tournament appearance, every four-year player in the Davidson program since 1994 will have played in the "Big Dance."
• In 2012-13, Davidson led the nation in free-throw percentage with a .795 clip.
• The 2013-14 season will be Davidson's final in the Southern Conference. In July of 2014, Davidson will join the Atlantic 10.
Series Notes
• Virginia leads the all-time series with Davidson, 10-4.
• The Cavaliers have won the last six meetings, but the two schools haven't met on the hardwood since the 1990-91 season.
• In Bob McKillop's first season at the helm, Davidson and Virginia met in the very first game at the Wildcats' current home, John M. Belk Arena, Dec. 1, 1989.
• Terry Holland '64, served as the head men's basketball coach and athletics director at both Davidson and Virginia.
• Holland, who played and later served as an assistant coach for Lefty Driesell, posted a 92-43 coaching record at Davidson, before taking the head-coaching job at Virginia in 1974.
Last Time Out
• Milwaukee finished 32-of-40 from the charity stripe and erased a double-digit deficit in the second half to knock off Davidson, 81-77, Monday evening at John M. Belk Arena.
• Tom Droney and Brian Sullivan paced Davidson with 22 points each, while De'Mon Brooks recorded his seventh career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Droney, who posted a personal best for the second straight outing, finished 7-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the line.
• Matt Tiby led five Milwaukee players in double digits with 21 points, which included a 10-for-12 effort at the charity stripe. Steve McWhorter added 12 points, Austin Arians and Jordan Aaron finished with 11 each, while Kyle Kelm chipped in 10.
• The opening half featured five ties and eight lead changes before Droney sparked a 17-5 run with a trey and layup in consecutive trips to put Davidson up, 36-27. The Panthers responded with a small spurt of their own, but the Wildcats pushed the lead to 10, 42-32, before taking a 42-35 lead into the half.
• Sullivan, who had the hot-hand early in the contest, led all players at the break with 18 points. Davidson's Brooks and Chris Czerapowicz sat a majority of the first half due to early foul trouble.
• After Davidson pushed its advantage to as many as 11 on several occasions in the second half, Milwaukee slowly chipped away and went ahead 66-65 with under six minutes to play on a pair of Kelm free throws.
• Trailing 70-67 with 4:11 left, the Wildcats reeled off four straight to go back in front, 71-70, but the Panthers responded with seven unanswered to go up for good. Davidson got to within two, 79-77, on a Droney layup with 15 seconds remaining, but that's as close as it would get.
• Davidson went to the line just 15 times, converting 11 of its attempts.
Tough Schedule
• Once again Davidson will tackle one of the nation's toughest non-conference schedules, which includes contests with Duke, Virginia, Georgia, Temple/Clemson, Drexel, North Carolina, Wichita State and College of Charleston.
• Four of Davidson's non-conference
opponents are ranked in the preseason Top-25
• All told, eight teams advanced to postseason play a year ago, including three that finished with RPIs in the Top-20, according to the NCAA's RPI ratings.
