DAVIDSON, N.C — The Wildcats women's soccer team seeks to finish their homestand out on a winning note Thursday evening when they host The Citadel under the lights at Alumni Stadium in a Southern Conference matchup.
The Matchup
Looking to finish its season-long three-game homestand on a winning note, Davidson plays The Citadel Thursday at 6 p.m. The Wildcats are 1-1 so far, earning a 2-1 overtime win vs. Western Carolina, before falling 2-1 in overtime to Appalachian State last Sunday.
The All-Time Series
This will be the 13th meeting for Davidson against the Bulldogs and it has dominated the series. The Wildcats lead 11-1 since both teams first met in 2001. The lone defeat came in 2010, a 3-1 setback on the road.
Last year saw Rachael Newmister and Lauren Swany each score a goal in guiding Davidson to a 2-1 road win.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson (3-7-3, 2-2 SoCon) went 1-1 in its second SoCon weekend, hosting Western Carolina and Appalachian State ... the 'Cats netted a 2-1 overtime win vs. the Catamounts Friday, but fell 2-1 to ASU Sunday in overtime ... Friday saw the Wildcats win on a penalty kick after WCU had a hand ball in the box ... Dani Johnson hit her second PK goal of the year for the win ... Sarah Tuggle scored a pair of the goals over the weekend to push her season total to three ... Sunday's contest saw ASU score off a corner kick five minutes into overtime ... Becca Fisher leads the team with 33 shots ... the win vs. the Catamounts was the Wildcats' 10th in the series and third straight ... Rachel Locke earned her third win of the year and pushed her save total to 64 with a combined 10 over the weekend ... she is second in the SoCon in saves, while in a three-way tie for second in shutouts with four ... the Wildcats are 2-4-1 at home this year ... they have gone 2-1-3 in overtime contests ... the 'Cats are playing their 20th and final season in the SoCon before moving to the A-10 ... Davidson was picked to finish fourth in the 2013 SoCon preseason poll ... the Wildcats return 21 letterwinners, including 10 starters ... head coach Greg Ashton enters his 10th season and needs just two more victories to reach 100 for his career at?Davidson ... the soccer program, which was started in 1989, is celebrating its 25th Anniversary throughout the year with the main festivities coming Oct. 18-20 against UNCG?and Elon.
Scouting the Bulldogs
The Citadel (3-6-2, 1-3 SoCon) is coming off a 1-1 weekend where it picked up a 2-1 victory Friday vs. Elon, but fell Sunday afternoon to UNCG, 5-3 ... Lea Raedle had a goal and assist in the win against the Phoenix ... she added two assists Sunday to push her season total to five, good for third-most in the SoCon ... Mariana Garcia has a team-high six goals, followed by Ruth Leiva with three ... in goal, Naomi Carter has started all 11 games ... she has a SoCon-best 98 saves ... the Citadel is just 1-3-1 in its last five games ... the Bullodgs are 0-5 on the road this year, having played at No. 17 Maryland, Navy, Presbyterian, Furman and Wofford ... The Citadel's 15 team assists are good for fifth in the league ... head coach Bob Winch is in his eighth year at the Citadel ... he has collected 37 wins and has 149 for his 20-year career.
