DAVIDSON, N.C. – Caue Da Silva scored 49 seconds into the second overtime to lead Elon to a 3-2 victory over Davidson in Southern Conference men's soccer action Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium.
"Losing in overtime to a rival in an important match is painful," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "But there were certainly some positives tonight for us. We scored two great goals and our energy and fight were certainly a step up from recent matches."
The Phoenix, who dropped out of the Top-25 last week, improve to 11-4-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the league, while the Wildcats fall to 6-9-1 and 1-4-0.
In addition to giving Davidson the early 1-0 advantage, Max Pragnell ended his club's 269-minute scoring drought with his second goal of the season. The freshman's header came 15:59 into the contest off a long centering pass from John Pace.
"John made a good run forward and served a precise cross in to a dangerous area. Maxi attacked the space and the ball at the perfect time. That goal was important tonight but it can also be a boost to Maxi's confidence moving forward," Spear commented.
Elon wasted little time evening the match as Jason Waterman, the league's top scorer, curled a right-footed shot inside the far post for his seventh goal. Midfielders James Brace and Daniel Lovitz assisted on the equalizer.
At the 50:32 mark, Brace gave Elon its first lead of the night with a strike from just inside the box on a feed from Lovitz.
Not long after checking into the contest for the first time, Jake Keator found the back of the net in the 78th minute to tie the score, 2-2. For Keator, it was his first goal since leading Davidson to its only tie of the season, a 1-1 draw against Navy in its season opener.
"When Jake sees a half chance, he's not afraid to have a go and his effort was powerful and accurate," said Coach Spear.
"Two goals scored in a home match should ideally be enough to earn a win, or a tie. We needed to be sharper in our defensive third to better contain Elon's attacking options. They are a good team, but we gave them too much space and time and they took their goals well."
Davidson's Matt Pacifici led both keepers with 11 saves.
The Wildcats will continue their season-ending homestand with a 7 p.m. contest against Virginia Tech Tuesday evening.
