WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Davidson suffered a 4-0 setback to nationally-ranked Wake Forest in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening at Spry Stadium.
"Wake Forest is excellent," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "They are the best quality team we'll play all season, so there is no shame in losing to them on the road. They were very sharp and hungry tonight."
The Demon Deacons, who defeated No. 4 Maryland in their last outing, improve to 8-3-4, while the Wildcats fall to 6-8-1.
Sean Okoli netted Wake's first goal in the ninth minute off an assist from Ross Tomaselli.
"There were moments when we did some good things in the first half, but allowing a goal early in each period were momentum builders for Wake," Spear said.
In the second half, Andy Lubahn extended the Demon Deacons' lead to 3-0 with strikes in the 47th and 78th minutes, while Shane Powell added an insurance goal with 6:39 left.
Playing against his former team, Matt Pacifici turned away a game-high nine shots for the Wildcats.
After playing its last two against non-conference foes, Davidson will resume league play this weekend when Elon comes to Alumni Stadium Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest.
"We need to pick ourselves up and learn from it as this is a real gut check for our guys," commented Spear.
