DAVIDSON, N.C. – Coming from 2-0 down in the first half, Davidson was unable to complete the comeback as Elon scored twice in the second half to go on for a 4-2 victory in the Wildcats' home finale Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium in Southern Conference women's soccer.
The Wildcats (5-9-3, 3-4 SoCon) erased a two-goal deficit by getting scores from the freshman duo of Ashley Finke at the 40:18 mark and a few minutes later by Kate Joss to tie things up going into halftime.
It was the second time this year the duo had scored in the same game.
Elon (10-2-4, 4-1-2 SoCon), which struck for a pair of goals a little over two minutes into the start of the game, including a score 19 seconds in by Nicole Dennion, got the game-winner from Marissa Russo at the 51:08 mark. The Phoenix took advantage of a Wildcat defender miss hit with Jennifer McGorty crossing the ball into Russo.
Kendall Stanley of the Phoenix added an insurance goal in the 70th minute for the final score. Elon pushed its unbeaten streak to five games.
Zoe Hayes earned her first assist on the season when she sent a long through ball off a set play to Finke on the far side of the 18-yard box. The forward gathered in the pass and fired a shot to the far post for the 'Cats' first goal.
The second score came off a cross from Stephanie Piperno to Joss in the box. Piperno picked up her third assist of the season and seventh point overall.
Rachel Locke suffered the defeat between the posts, stopping five shots to give her a new career-best 77 saves on the year. Sydney Branson of Elon had three saves.
During halftime, returning alumni were honored from the past 25 years of Davidson women's soccer. All weekend the Wildcats celebrated their anniversary of the program.
Davidson takes to the road for its final three regular season games, first heading next weekend to play Wofford, Oct. 25 and then at Furman, Oct. 27.
