Brooks Preseason Player of the Year; Davidson Picked Second

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second consecutive season, Davidson's De'Mon Brooks has been voted the Southern Conference Preseason Player of the Year, while the Wildcats are predicted to finish second in the standings, as announced by the league office Thursday morning.
Last year's Tournament MVP, Brooks led Davidson in rebounding (6.2) and steals (30) in 2012-13, while ranking among league leaders in scoring (13.7/13th), field-goal percentage (.500/7th), free-throw percentage (.747/12th) and offensive rebounds (2.2/7th).
A year ago, Brooks helped lead the Wildcats to their second straight Southern Conference Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance.
In 2011, the Charlotte native was voted the SoCon Player of the Year by the league head coaches.
Brooks is joined on the preseason team by Jay Canty (Appalachian State), Ryley Beaumont (Elon), Jack Isenbarger (Elon), Lucas Troutman (Elon), Raijon Kelly (Samford), Tim Williams (Samford), Z. Mason (Chattanooga), Trey Sumler (Western Carolina) and Karl Cochran (Wofford).
Coming off a 26-8 season and their 12th NCAA Tournament berth in school history, the Wildcats received three first-place votes (90 points) in the coaches' poll and 12 first-place votes (268 points) by the media.
Elon was chosen the league favorite in both polls, while Western Carolina was voted third behind Davidson.
Following Saturday's Red/Black Scrimmage, the Wildcats will host Lenoir-Rhyne in an exhibition game Nov. 3 before opening the season Nov. 8 against Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
