Ludwick, Lankiewicz Earn Wins in Loss to ECU

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Dylan Ludwick and Elise Lankiewicz each finished with a pair of wins as the Davidson swimming & diving teams fell to in-state foe East Carolina at Cannon Pool Saturday afternoon. The men fell 171.5-118.5 to the Pirates while the women dropped the meet 178-114.
"This meet, against a very good East Carolina team, was great opportunity for our athletes to test themselves. By and large, our team embraced the chance to race great swimmers, and we had some great performances," said head coach John Young. "Obvious among them were Dylan and Elise, winning events in dramatic fashion, but we also saw great individual performances from an assortment of other athletes who took care of business in their lanes. The intentional racing habits that we are developing will serve us well as our competitive season progresses."
Ludwick claimed a win in the 1000-yard freestyle, touching 9:40.35. He would later take the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 4:37.41 for a narrow victory. Lankiewicz claimed also claimed the 500, swimming a 5:02.13 and won the 200 free in 1:53.66.
Luke Burton was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke, touching in 52.74. Spencer Gill also claimed a second-place finish in a time of 1:00.45. Davied Sanchez (54.30) and Drew Gill (1:00.45) each finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke and breaststroke, respectively.
Also grabbing a second-place finish was Cameron Bard, who finished as the runner up in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.93. Brandon Kegley finished fifth in the event, swimming 22.26. In the 200-yard butterfly, Will Fox and Thomas Bigham finished third and fourth, respectively. Fox touched the wall in 1:59.56, while Bigham swam a 1:59.83.
Fox also picked up first place points in the 100-yard fly, swimming a 52.51. Bigham was once again close behind, touching in 53.47.
Bard picked up fourth place in the 100-yard free, touching in 48.56 He was followed by Kegley in fifth in a time of 48.61. Burton then picked up his second top-3 finish of the day, claiming third in the 200-yard back in 1:58.07.
Grant Smith and Spencer Gill went two-three in the 200-yard breaststroke. Smith hit the pads in 2:10.46, while Gill made it home in 2:12.11. Smith scored first place points for the Cats in the 200-yard IM, finishing in a time of 1:58.49. He was followed by Spencer Davies in second at 1:58.86.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Burton, Gill, Fox and Bard took second too start the meet, finishing in 1:36.71. To close the meet, Ludwick, Burton, Bard and Kegley combined to pick up first place points in the 400-yard free relay. The quartet teamed for a time of 3:10.13.
On the women's side, Lauren Malachowski, Caroline Vrana, Erica Clancy and Lankiewicz opened things up with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The four teamed for a time of 2:02.00 in the event.
Anna Blair Bullock took fifth in the first individual event of the day – the 1,000-yard freestyle. She swam a time of 10:48.14. Malachowski placed fourth in her first individual race of the meet, swimming a 59.78 in the 100-yard backstroke. She was followed by Kassie Shannon, who took fifth in 1:01.86.
Katy Williams touched the pads in 1:07.92 in the 100-yard breaststroke for fourth place. Vrana followed that with a 1:08.75 for fifth place.
Lankiewicz finished third in the 200-yard butterfly, just ahead of Meredith Nakano. Lankiewicz swam a 2:05.97, while Nakano claimed fourth in 2:08.77.
Fellow frosh Clancy placed third in the 50-yard freestyle, touching in 24.56. Relay-mate Healy followed her in fourth place with a time of 25.00. The duo also competed in the 100-yard freestyle, with Healy claiming fourth (53.91) and Clancy finishing fifth (54.55).
Malachowski finished third in the 100-yard backstroke, hitting the wall in 2:11.48. Emma Tobey was fourth in the event, swimming a 2:17.01.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Nakano earned a runner-up finish in a time of 2:25.34. Rookie teammate Williams followed, touching the pads in 2:26.36. Nakano later earned first-place points for the Wildcats with a 59.46 in the 100-yard fly. Liz Mace, who swam a 1:00.29 in the event, followed her.
Emily Covert took top points in the 200-yard IM, finishing in 2:14.98. Williams followed in 2:18.92.
Nakano, Clancy, Malachowski and Healy combined to pick up first-place points in the 400-yard freestyle. The four combined for a time of 3:37.65 to finish the meet.
In the diving events, Kaliya Burton-Akright took home third place in the 1-meter. She scored of 228.45. Karen Monuszko was sixth in the event, finishing with 203.10 points. In the 3-meter, it was Monuszko who led the way for the Wildcats with a second-place finish. She scored 244.43, while Burton-Akright finished fifth with 223.27 points.
Brian McRae claimed second in the men's 1-meter, scoring 233.70 points. Jonathan Oberti was fourth with 147.75. McRae also finished third in the 3-meter, racking up 228.97 points while Oberti claimed fourth in 145.95.
The Wildcats will travel to Charleston, S.C., next Saturday for more dual meet action. They will face off with former CCSA foe College of Charleston in an 11:30 meet.
