Hot-Shooting Wildcats Cruise to Big 41-Point Win at Furman; Aleksandravicius Sets Career Points Mark

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Laura Murray dropped in a game-high 17 points, Sophia Aleksandravicius set the program's all-time scoring mark and Davidson shot 59.2 percent in rolling to its fourth win in a row with an 87-46 triumph at Furman in Southern Conference women's basketball action at Timmons Arena Tuesday evening.
The Wildcats (8-7, 5-0 SoCon) remained perfect in SoCon play, while winning their sixth league game in a row dating back to the last game of the regular season a year ago. Overall they have won 17 of their past 19 SoCon contests.
Murray, who has scored in double figures now five straight games, netted 13 of her 17 points in the first half when the 'Cats used a 30-8 run and shot 55.2 percent to open up its biggest lead of the season going into halftime at 46-21. Nine different Wildcats etched their names in the scorer's book with Murray and Hannah Early clipping the double-digit mark at 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Early finished with a career-best 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including swishing home three triples. Dakota Dukes reached the double-digit mark with 12 points, while Barbara Sitton had a season-high nine points to go with four assists and three steals.
All 13 Wildcats scored with Mason Jeffries netting her first two points of the year and Mellissa Giegerich swatting away her first block of the season. Alex Long had a season-best six points with a perfect 2-for-2 shooting on field goals and free throws.
The first half also saw Aleksandravicius break the all-time scoring mark with a baseline jumper for her 1,511th and 1,512th points. She added two more points in the game to go with six boards and two blocks.
Davidson's 59.2 percent shooting was a season-best. The Wildcats were even better in the second half, knocking down 13-of-20 shots for a blistering 65 percent. The 29 made field goals were a team season-best, while the Wildcats assisted on 17 of the buckets.
Furman's (6-9, 2-4 SoCon) Patrice Butler had 16 points off the bench as the Paladins were held to 30 percent shooting for the game.
Davidson's largest lead of the game was 43 points (76-33) when Sarah Davis (5 points, 4 rebounds) hit a free throw with 5:24 left.
The Wildcat bench had a season-high 40 points, while as a team they scored 28 points off 14 Furman turnovers. Davidson also drained a season-best 23 free throws on 32 attempts.
The Wildcats, playing three games in a six-day span, begin a four-game homestand this Friday, Jan. 18, with a matchup against Chattanooga at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Davidson won for the fourth time in the last five road games at Furman … the 41-point win is the largest for the Wildcats in the all-time series … tonight's game was the final of 12 road games the Wildcats played in their first 15 games overall …. The 'Cats have won seven of the past 11 meetings vs. Furman, including last three … the last 3-0 start on the road in SoCon games was 2009-10 … the last time Davidson shot better than 50 percent for a game was last Feb. 8 vs. UNCG ... with her 17 points tonight, Murray is now just five points away from 1,000 for her career.
