DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Wildcat volleyball team (6-7, 2-1 SoCon) earned a dominating 3-0 win over The Citadel (2-15, 0-3 SoCon) on Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena, moving the team to 2-1 in the Southern Conference. The 'Cats won the match with set scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 27-25.
Caroline Brown recorded a double-double with 10 digs and a team-leading 14 kills. Tindall Sewell also had 14 kills and led the way with a .414 attacking percentage. In addition to her impressive hitting, Sewell posted two block solos and three block assists. Ariel Ley dished out a team-high 40 assists on the way to the win, and added in 11 digs for a double-double. Molly Crenshaw had 18 digs and five assists as the 'Cats hit .218 on the day.
Cassie Uribe had a team-high eight kills for The Citadel, while Amanda Rudnik and Jessica Maxwell each had seven. Mikaela Tracy was the team leader with 21 assists and had 12 digs. Rudnik was the team's defensive leader with 14 digs, with Rachel Farrell chipping in 10. Rudnik and Lauren Hurt each had two block solos and two block assists while Erin Bucherl recorded the team's lone service ace of the day.
The two teams battled to a 6-6 tie in the first set before the Wildcats took a slim lead on kills by Brown and Sewell. A block by Rudnik and Maxwell tied things up at 11-11 and the squads kept it close as they traded the next few points. Davidson scored on four straight plays, rounding things out with a service ace by Megan Chamberlin for a 20-16 lead. Though the Bulldogs came within two on a kill by Tracy, a kill and an ace by Brown then a kill by Rau would finish the set off and give the 'Cats the 25-20 win.
Davidson dominated from the start in the second set, pushing out to a 9-5 lead on a kill by Brown. A pair of kills by Ley made it a seven-point advantage for the Wildcats at 15-8. An error on Davidson cut the lead to five, but Ley and Pisel each recorded kills to bring it back to six. Michelle McNeight entered the game to record a big kill, setting up set point before Sewell ended the set with the 'Cats in front 25-21 for the 2-0 match lead.
The Bulldogs put up a fight in the third set, taking a 12-7 lead on an ace by Erin Bucherl. An error on the 'Cats kept The Citadel up by five before a kill by Brown started a four-point rally. Another kill from Brown tied the set at 19-19 before a service ace from the junior outside hitter put the 'Cats in front. McNeight came up with a kill and the Bulldogs produced a pair of errors to keep the Wildcats ahead by two. However, Rudnik would tie the set with a kill for The Citadel and they would take a one-point lead on a Davidson error. Sewell slammed down a kill to tie the set once again and the squads traded errors to keep Davidson in front by one. A final error from the Bulldogs would be match point for the 'Cats, who took the set 27-25 for the 3-0 win.
The Wildcats return to Belk Arena on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match up with the College of Charleston. The 'Cats are looking to pack the house with a goal of achieving more than 800 spectators at the game.
