‘Cats Drop SoCon Match to Cougars 3-0

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team (6-8, 2-2 SoCon) dropped a 3-0 decision to the College of Charleston (12-5, 4-0 SoCon) on Sunday afternoon, as the Cougars remain unbeaten in Southern Conference action. The 'Cats fell 22-25, 20-25 and 19-25 in the loss.
Tindall Sewell hit over .400 for the third straight match, hitting .444 and leading the 'Cats with nine kills. She also tied her previous season high with four block assists and recorded a dig and an assist.
Caroline Brown had 10 digs and eight kills, recording one the 'Cats two aces on the day. Molly Crenshaw had eight digs and an assist, while Ariel Ley had 25 assists and three kills. Hannah Rau posted three block assists and four more Wildcats recorded two block assists apiece as the squad finished with 7.5 team blocks. Rau also finished with six kills, with Rachel Earnhardt and Anastasia Owen chipping in with five and four digs, respectively.
Darcy Dorton had 14 kills to lead the Cougars, who hit .237 as a team. Sloane White recorded 12 kills, two block assists and a trio of service aces while Emily Shelton led the defensive effort with 16 digs. Taeler Davis had 35 assists and three block assists as the Cougars posted 10 team blocks.
The 'Cats got off to a hot start in the first set, taking a 6-2 lead on a kill by Ley. The Cougars regrouped with a timeout and tied the game at 7-7 with a 5-1 scoring run. A pair of kills by Brown and a block by Sewell and Pisel put Davidson in front once again at 13-10. Rau added in a pair of kills to keep the match in favor of the Wildcats at 18-17. Dorton put up two kills for the Cougars, cutting the CofC deficit to just one before White notched a kill to tie the game at 20-20. White then had three kills in the final six points as the Cougars took set one by a score of 25-22.
College of Charleston led early in the second set, taking a 10-4 lead on a Davidson attacking error. Brown picked up an ace and a kill before Earnhardt recorded a kill to bring the 'Cats within four at 10-4, but a pair of Davidson errors would later put the Cougars' lead up to seven at 17-10. A slew of errors on both teams would put the score at 22-19 in favor of the Cougars and a Dorton kill would put things away for CofC at 25-20.
The two teams traded points to start the third, battling to a 6-6 tie. Megan Chamberlin picked up a kill for the 'Cats to give them the 10-8 lead, but the Cougars came back to tie the set at 10-10 on a kill from Kerstin Koehler. Dorton slammed down a kill soon after to put CofC in front 12-11, but the 'Cats would take the lead back on an attacking error by the Cougars. Koehler had a kill to put CofC back in front before back-to-back kills from Melissa Morello put the lead at 20-15. A Davidson error finished off the set soon after as the Cougars got the 25-19 win to take the match 3-0.
The 'Cats will hit the road this week, traveling to Cullowhee, N.C., to face SoCon foe Western Carolina on Oct. 6 in a 7 p.m. match up. They return to Belk Arena on Oct. 8 to kick off a three-match home stand starting with a 6 p.m. tilt with Georgia Southern.
